Bizarrely, the word “umlaut” contains no umlauts itself. But that didn’t stop a generation of metal and hard rock bands from punctuational insanity, throwing the toughest two dots known to man into their names wherever they felt like it. Can you pick out the correct placement of the world’s heaviest diacritic in each band name? (Word of warning: Some band names may contain no umlauts whatsoever. Sissies.)

  1. And after the quiz, all I can think about is this:

  2. Sorry to give an answer away here, but…

The “Ä” in “Die Ärzte” is no Heavy Metal Umlaut. It’s a German band and the name “Die Ärzte” simply means “The Doctors”. The spelling of “Ärzte” is correct just the way it is, no Heavy Metal Umlaut intended.
Besides that, it’s no Metal band either. ;)

(The 3 dots however are a parody of the Heavy Metal Umlaut)

  3. Great quiz as usual. But, I’ve never considered Husker Du a metal band, either.

  4. I think that’s the worst quiz I’ve ever taken at the Floss. 2 of 10. Ouch. What? No Dokken? I’d have gotten Dokken right.
