Miraculously I've recently acquired a piece of our U.S. history. An 1896 intact stapler. Uncertain on what I should do with it... Any suggestions?

Somewhere in my house there's an old OLD stapler from my grandfather that doesn't use staples. It has a little spool of wire on the back of it. The wire is fed through the machine, and when you push down on it the staples are cut and formed from the wire before being pushed into the paper.

Awesome article! I agree with Steven that scrolls are fantastic, and it's a shame they aren't used more often even in the modern day, but I'm also a fan of the "stapleless stapler" they have over at Think Geek. My husband got one, and it's amongst our top favourite gadgets! No metal required, it just crimps the paper itself. Unfortunately it can't always handle as many sheets of paper as the traditional Swingline.

Thanks for the Japanese word too. Planning a trip there -- never know when we'll have need of a stapler, err... hochikisu.

Though not a fastening technique, I've always loved scrolls. They were great ways to protect and transport your information. And if you did it right, you could roll multiple sheets in one scroll without them slipping or being exposed.

I'm always fascinated when languages other than English use our brand names for a generic term. For instance, the Russian word for "vacuum bottle" is "термос," or "termos."
