Today’s Brain Game may seem unanswerable at first, but don’t let that throw you. The puzzle is really in two parts… once you identify what the clues have in common, you have to employ that information (and perhaps do a quick info search) to come up with the final answer. Good luck!

Ralph is rather picky.

He owns a football, but not a basketball.
He likes chocolate, but not strawberry.
He uses UPS, but steers clear of FedEx.
And he idolizes Joe Louis, but ignores Rocky Marciano.

Based on these four clues,
in what U.S. city did Ralph attend college?

Here is the SOLUTION.

  1. Basketballs aren’t brown?, asked the old coot.

  2. Basketballs could be brown. It all depends on your perception of the color. Most people would say they’re orange. I agree that they are of an earthtone color, resembling brown more.

    …said the young coot.

  3. As a kid who excelled at youth basketball (before my growth spurts turned more horizontal than vertical) I can attest to playing with an old basketball that was almost brown… we called it “the old ball.” (It was a rural county youth league, so we didn’t have many to choose from.)

Anyway, it was a light brown; almost a tan. But every “regular” basketball I’ve seen, I’d say it was orange. I’d even say “pumpkin”-color if I didn’t think Kara would make fun of me.

And, FWIW, I originally had “baseball” in that slot, but figured that a basketball would make for a better contrast.

  4. I’m just glad I got it correct right away. Yay!

  5. It took me a while, but I’m glad I had the foresight* to figure this one out.

    * =synonym for the answer.

  6. I went with Cleveland :) Guess I was too ready for some NFL football…

  7. My Ralph went to Brown College in Minneapolis.

  8. Good for you, Connie. I’d definitely consider that to be a correct answer.

  9. @Josh – I also associated brown with Cleveland. It’s football time!

  10. I also said Cleveland!

But you know, being from NorthEast Ohio, that makes sense. :P

  11. yay I got it right. but I had to see where brown was located and look up joe luis. ahahahha.

  12. Hey, I finally got the right answer on one of these quizzes! Now, you guys are going to tell me it was pathetically easy, aren’t you?

  13. He could have also gone to school in Cleveland, Ohio, home of the Browns!
