This morning, for the second time in four days, I found a dirty five-dollar bill while walking my dog. In my whole life, I don’t think I’ve ever found that much cash. The universe is trying to tell me something. (”Really sorry I couldn’t help with those MegaMillions numbers,” perhaps.) Or maybe someone has signed me up for one of those Consumer Recreation Services adventures featured in The Game, and this is just the beginning.
Or I have a neighbor with a hole in his pants.
In defiance of wise counsel, I will likely spend it all in one place. That’s where you come in. Head over to eBay and find the coolest, weirdest, most baffling item with an opening bid of $5 or less. The item should be something I could display on my desk.
Leave a comment with a link and your description. Top three most enjoyable entries will win mental_floss t-shirts.

This little wonder will look great on your desk and it is useful too. It is a plastic circa 1980s Rainbow Brite bank. The description from the seller is priceless and adds to the mystique of this one-of-a-kind item. Some of her paint is scratched off, particularly in the eye area and over the years she has developed a tear at the corner of one eye. Not sure if the tear has any healing powers but can’t rule it out.
The starting bid is $4.99 so you can put your saved penny in the bank when it arrives!

How many times has this happened to you: You’re relaxing at your desk getting ready to open a beer and a bottle of wine when you realize, “Oh no!! I don’t have a bottle opener OR a corkscrew.” About that time your coworker comes into your office with a look of distress upon his face. His wife packed him a tuna and marmalade sandwich for lunch but he forgot to bring the salt and pepper, and everyone knows you can’t eat a tuna and marmalade sandwich without salt and pepper. But wait!!! You suddenly remember your salt and pepper shakers with attached bottle opener and corkscrew just came in the mail! Whew, crisis averted. You offer to share your beer if your coworker will share his tuna and marmalade sandwich and all is well. Just another day a Mental Floss.
For sale one salt and pepper shaker/bottle opener corkscrew set. This vintage set comes with their own display case. Not to mention the cute their painted little faces are! Opening bid at $4.99, what a steal!

40 years ago (Almost exactly to the day) John Lennon announced he was leaving the Beatles. So, this tells me that a Beatles mental_floss piece could be on the cards. What better tool could you ask for other than a (rare) Beatles trivia book and (rare) Beatles quiz book?

You could decoratively display this in a fishbowl on your desk. Maybe even run a string of Christmas lights through it for effect. ;) Or pretend it’s Magnum PI’s chest hair.
