What’s the Best Movie of the Decade?
by Jason English - August 28, 2009 - 11:00 AM
bloghead_fridayhappyhour1.gif

Every Friday, I post a series of unrelated questions meant to spark conversation in the comments. Answer one, answer all, respond to someone else’s reply, whatever you want. It’s casual. On to this week’s topics of discussion…

1. As we approach the end of the aughts, a lot of people are asking this question: what was the best movie of the decade? I need some time on this one.

2. Twice this week I found five-dollar bills while walking my dog. (I enlisted your help in deciding how to spend it; I’ll have a follow-up post on that later today Monday.) What’s the best/weirdest/most unbelievable thing you’ve ever found?

sebastian-coe3. Last week, we looked back in Time Magazine’s cover archives to see what was in the news the week you were born. If you’re a sports fan, you can do the same thing with Sports Illustrated (click here, then search by year). When I came into the world, SI was celebrating Sebastian Coe’s 3:49 mile. And if you were born this decade, you can play the same game with mental_floss magazine back issues.

4. What’s something you did for the first time this summer?

5. I’m going to throw in a “What’s the best ________ of the decade?” question each week. What are some other things you’d like to hear people weigh in on? Non-fiction book? New stamp? Technological advancement?

Comments (76)
  1. 1) If the award is for my favorite movie, how about ‘Little Miss Sunshine’? Tough question.

    2) I once found $20 in a pair of pants I was trying on at Macy’s. I don’t know how it got there, but I kept it and passed on the pants.

    3) Doug Flutie Beats Miami! http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/cover/featured/8934/index.htm

    4) Left the country! I spent two weeks visiting a friend who’s working in London.

    5) New Product Launch? Commercial? Quote?

  2. 1. eternal sunshine of the spotless mind.
    2. i bought “the things they carried” by tim o’brien at a used book store. reread the book years later and saw on the inside cover that the book was originally sold at the kent state university book store. the vietnam war connection bugged me out.

  3. #2: When I was about 13 I found an antique style double-edged dagger in our basement amongst some old stuff.

The freaky thing was that it had my initials engraved in it.

I immediately pictured myself on top of a volcano, some masonic priest about to slit my throat with said dagger and toss me in to fulfill some prophesy.

Turns out it was just a coincidence. Too bad. The volcano thing makes for a much better story.

#4: I’ve been a guitar player most of my life, and despite playing music professionally for many years I’ve never played guitar in a band. I always got roped into playing something else that was needed (piano or bass). After a ten year hiatus from the music business (sponsored in part by Clear Blue Easy) I joined a weekend bar band and played my first gig on guitar. It was a good time.

  4. 1…My boyfriend and I had the “Best Movie” discussion last weekend. He voted for “Milk,” which we just saw last month. Nothing really stood out for me, though. I’ll go for “Lost in Translation.”

5…Magazine Article or piece of legislation. And I like Martin’s “Best Quote” idea.

  5. 1. “Open Range:” I’m a big fan of Westerns, and though I read complaints about its pacing, I thought the acting, the costumes, the sets, the story, even the sound and smoke effects during the gunfight (everything actually looked and sounded like a black powder firearm!) was top notch.

    2. In 1996 I was going through the glove compartment of a 1971 Dodge pickup belonging to my grandmother (it was the last new vehicle Grandpa bought before he died in 1976 and was used intermittently on the farm since) and found the original invoice and owner’s manual. I know all the specifications on it, how much it cost, what Grandpa traded in on it, even the check number he used to pay the balance.

    3. World Series, Dodgers and Yankees

    4. I assembled a firearm-several hundred, actually, working for a friend at a factor in Dayton, Ohio

    5. Band (could be divided into different genres), Fad, fiction/nonfiction book

  6. knitted “mitten” for your naughty bits.

There was an old wooden trunk in my basement, originally from my grandparents’ house, and I was bored so I went snooping through it and found a knitted doll with exposed breasts, and a knitted mitten in the shape of a penis and scrotum. I don’t know who made them, and I don’t know who they were for. Creeped me out for the entire night…

  7. 1… A similar question was covered on ESPN recently, although I believe it was about the “defining” movie of the aughts. they came up with “Almost Famous.” I’m not sure I can beat that answer.

  8. #2 I live in a rural area and often take walks along the gravel roads. A few months ago I was walking on a part of the road that has only one house on it (mine!) for about 2 miles after leaving the highway. In the middle of the road, all by itself, was a silver tablespoon. I left it. Who knows where that thing had been?

  9. 1. Gladiator, with my guilty pleasure being Superbad.

    2. When I was a kid I found a $20 bill floating down the lazy river at a water park. It was spent before the day was over.

    3. When I was born everyone was talking about NC State beating Phi Slamma Jamma to win March Madness. The highlight of Jimmy V running around to find someone to hug is still a classic.

    4. This summer I remodeled a bathroom, and hopefully I wont have to do it again anytime soon.

    5. What is the best memory of the decade? What is the best (worst?) fashion faux pas of the decade? What was the best casualty of the decade, meaning thing we were glad to see go?

  10. 1. None really stand out for me.

    2. Not found but returned. 14 years ago when some friends helped me move into my house, one of them “appropriated” an embarrassing photo of me in my youth. She promptly forgot about it until she found it when going through an old file cabinet. She brought it in to work to return to me.

    4. Drove to New York City.

  11. Wall-E was by far the best movie of the decade. Totally original and a great story…Love in its simplest form.

  12. Hey EV: that volcano thing IS a better story called “The Night Face Up” by Cortazar. I would have been freaked by the initials, too!

    1. V for Vendetta–really the first one that popped into my head. I’d need a list.

    3. The day after I was born: the pro football issue. My Hubs would be proud.

    4. I drove coast-to-coast this summer on a month-long road trip!

5.Best: new author, new artist, vehicle design…

  13. Helping a friend with a garage sale I came upon a large stereo speaker with a loose front grill. I tried to snap it back in place but instead dislodged the whole front. There was a porn stash inside but that’s not the strange part. Part of the porn stash was a book on the tintinabula of Pompeii. Pompeii has its naughty bits but I never considered this historic stuff to be pornographic enough to be hidden. For those who want to know what tintinabula refers to in this case, Pompeii contained many decorative bells composed of assemblages of naughty parts. They are more funny than dirty.

  14. 1. I’d go with Lord of the Rings, but that’s not a film so to speak. For a single movie, Children of Men takes the top spot. As for my FAVORITE flick of the decade, that’s gotta be Kung Fu Hustle.

  15. 1. I’m gonna have to go with Amelie on this one, but I also agree with Eternal Sunshine and WALL-E.

    4. Skydiving! From 14,000 feet. Can’t wait for my 2nd jump!

  16. 1. If Lord of the Rings isn’t acceptable because it’s three movies (to which I say, feh, it’s one story), I’ll go with Children of Men or Eternal Sunshine.

    3. Say hey, I got Willie Mays for my birth week. Which is bad-freaking-ass.

    4. Took my daughter to the zoo.

  17. 1. I would defintely have to say WALL-E. I mean the first 5 minutes has no dialogue whatsoever. Try doing that to any other movie and see how long you can watch for.

    2. Mine is “Dangerous Dan: Dan Marino Passes Miami into the Superbowl”

    3. I’ve had to take my puppy to a 24-hour emergency clinic. I’ve never been to an emergency clinic before and believe me I never want to do that again. My puppy is fine by the way.

    4. I think the best game of the decade would be an interesting one to debate. You could ask for a football, soccer, basketball, or any kind of sport to be more specific.

  18. 1. Best movie of the decade is “No Country for Old Men”
    2. Strangest thing I’ve found was a mason jar with the corps of a two-headed sparrow in gasoline. Found it in my garage back in my youth.
    3. Doug Williams and the Washington Redskins (uck, I’m a Giants fan now).
    4. I went surfing for the first time this summer.
    5. Best album or song of the decade.

  19. 1. No Country For Old Men. (Pan’s Labyrinth and Amelie tied for 2nd).

  20. 1- First movie that comes to mind is Crash.

2-Recently found my old reports cards from primary school. That was a cool find. I was a very different child from the (alleged) adult that I am now. I was shy, quiet and basically a joy to be around…where did it all go wrong?!

4- Camping for a full weekend in the rain. I’ve camped before but never in the rain. It is a much less enjoyable experience.

5-I’d be interested to everyone’s opinion on the most influential person of the decade.

  21. 1. I have trouble selecting one movie from the last decade because I generally don’t see movies until they’ve been out a while, so I never know what year they are from. But most recently I saw “7 pounds” and I really liked it.
    2. THe film in my aunt’s camera after she passed. It was an old brownie. We developed the pictures and they were of my older brother gathering eggs. The film had to be 20 or more years old when we developed it. Too much fun.
    3. US Open Preview, cover featured Dick Mayer.
    4. Drove by myself in DC. I hate driving anyplace new by myself and DC was a huge accomplisment for me. I actually even feel comfortable doing so now! (Limited locations!)
    5. Best of quotes… I like that one.

  22. I found a bank envelope with $140 in it on the ground in a parking lot. It had a receipt in it from a Credit Union with the person’s name on it. So… I took it to credit union the next day. Sure could have used that money. But if I had lost that much money I would hope someone would turn it in.

  23. 1. LOTR Trilogy. Cliche I know, but I love them so much!

    2. Just last week, I found a gold necklace with an emerald pendant – the very same I give to my mother many years ago – in the bathroom drain. Many thanks, and hugs were given.

    3. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/cover/featured/8984/index.htm my issue. I’m assuming he did something good for LSU basketball. I only know about their football program.

    4. I bought a season pass for an amusement park for the first time. BEST DECISION EVER! I saved so much money with that thing.

    5. The best website to use only one feature, a feature that every other social networking site uses, and capitalizes on it alone is Twitter.

  24. 70s – Star Wars
    80s – Planes, Trains, & Automobiles
    90s – Goodfellas
00s – Batman (The Dark Knight)

  25. 1. It’s either No Country for Old Men or Pan’s Labyrinth.

    5. Best Album would be interesting.

  26. 1. Has to be Anchorman. Stay classy.

  27. 1) I cheated – used the IMDB top 50 of the 2000s to help. I second Children of Men! (glad to see there’s another fan) Edges out The Departed, Frost/Nixon, and City of God

    http://www.imdb.com/chart/2000s

3)George Foster – Cincy Reds October preview (also, an ex-Met, back when we had family visits to the games)

    4) vaca with just my gf

    5) best sports game is a good one. scientific discovery? invention? TED talk?

  28. 1. (I can’t pick one) City of God, Before Night Falls, Amores Perros or La Vie En Rose

    2. I found a small purse on the beach. It had semi-precious gems sewn on it as well as a bead / gemstone strap. It contained $, a credit card and drivers license. I was terrible, I kept the money and purse and mailed the CC and license to its rightful owner.

    3. The Derby! Seattle Slew is front and center at Churchill Downs

    4. I gave birth

    5. Best federal coverup / scandal

  29. I don’t know. I’d say it’s a toss between The Departed, Inglourious Basterds, Y Tu Mama Tambien and United 93.

  30. #1 – Based on both statistics and my own personal belief as a movie buff (not a pimply geek living with my parents), I have to give my nod to the LOTR trilogy. The domination of the Return of the King at the 2003 Oscars was more an indication of the the trilogy than the individual movie. It won 11 (one of only three movies to win 11) out of the 11 it was nominated for, none of those 11 went to actors (so it wasn’t one great performance, but a compilation of great acting), and it was truly epic movie/trilogy that last 12+ hrs and was filmed all at once (something other films are not starting to copy).

#2 – While browsing a thrift store in Austria, I found a T-shirt from my high school graduating class in my size. I didn’t buy it, because I already had it. But I took a picture.

#4 – Called someone in China

#5 – The best upset of the decade (or most memorable, depending on your side of the issue). Doesn’t have to be a sports upset (politics, awards, etc.).

  31. 1) My vote is for the Royal Tenenbaums.

  32. 1. A tie between “V for Vendetta”, for it’s depiction of the totalitarianism/anarchy spectrum, and “Stranger Than Fiction”, for its portrayal of free will and character(pun intended).

    3. Kirk Gibson! I became a fan of multi-sport athletes long ago. It’s fitting that the cover of SI from my birth week is of “the best wide receiver in major league baseball.”

  33. 1. Wall-E was fantastic, and if you want live action movie, I’d have to say Hot Fuzz. I like British humor.

    2. I went for a walk in a park many years ago, came across a twenty dollar bill laying on the ground.

    5. I like the technological advancement idea – I just came across my husbands Famicom in the attic, among numerous other games and consoles I’ve never seen.

  34. 1) Up
    2) I never find interesting things. But I did see a car with a giant rubber rat on the dashboard and I took a picture of it. That has to count for something, right?
    4) I spent almost a week in the hospital as a patient, starting in the ER and including some time in ICU. I’m hoping not to do that again.

  35. 1. No Country for Old Men.
    2. Marrioed with a baby in college one day I was really broke. I took the family to the beach and found a $20 on top of an incoming wavr. Fed us for several days. Karma Man!

  36. 1. LOTR – I consider it one movie
    4. I went to 7 Phish shows completely sober (I am pregnant).

  37. 1. Mean Girls. Smart and funny.
    2. I found a set of old-timey keys in the middle of the road.

  38. 1. Garden State. End of question!

  39. 1. City of God

  40. i didn’t have anything interesting to say, but the captcha for me is:

    $48,804,000 fahey

    seriously…

  41. Two finds would probably fit this category, although I don’t know which one was more interesting. First, my friend and I found an unloaded submachine gun in his backyard one day. We cleaned it up and were using it to shoot crayons when my dad came home, freaked out, and called the police. Come to find out it was used in a local bank robbery earlier that day and the robbers got away. The only usable clue would have been the gun, but since we cleaned it up there were no fingerprints. Hey, we were like 10 years old, what did we know. The other find was on my way home from school one day. I left early because I was sick and found a bag of marijuana on a wall next to a bank. Again, I was too young to know what to do with the stuff so I gave it to my mom when I got home and she flushed it. When my older brother found out he was mad at me for not giving it to him.

  42. Yeah, Bill Simmons on ESPN posed the question in one of his podcasts. He started with Dark Knight, but settled with Almost Famous.

Personally, I agree with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Although I am a huge fan of Lost In Translation and Garden State.

  43. 1. I would say United 93 or The Fountain. I’m big on District 9 right now but I will have to give that some time to see if I really think it’s that good.

  44. 1) I would go witht LOTR also Harrry Potter
    2) I found $140 in a drawer in a hotel room I checked into. Brought it to the desk. Later that evening I was given a note with $20 and thanks as reward.
    3) My cover was “Las Vagas”.
    4) Sat in the passenger seat of my car teaching my daughter to drive. I have a lot more grey hair.
    5) I like best band or song.

  45. The Departed…all the way

  46. 1. The Lives of Others

A fantastic reminder of the evil that people are willing to tolerate. Also a warning of what the future is capable of holding for us.

  47. 1. I agree with many of the movie selections so far (and strongly disagree with several others!), but I’d like to speak for HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, DANCER IN THE DARK, WONDER BOYS and BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN.

  48. 1. City of God, or Children of Men.

    2. Once found a nicely rolled, unsmoked marijuana cigarette on the steps of the West Virginia state capitol building. Which was put to good use.

    3. A basketball player named Dave Debusschere, whom I’ve never heard of.

    4. Wrote and directed an opera.

  49. 1. La Misma Luna. I’ve never cried like that during a movie!

  50. 1) 300. How can that many hot bodies not win?
    2) For ten bucks? I would buy move theatre popcorn. I never ever buy the stuff, because it’s price is just insane. If the money just showed up, then go ahead and support your local movie theater and buy an overpriced bucket!
3)Kansas City wins 3rd world series, House Bill 72 was passed.
    4) I went diving in a shark tank
    5) What was the best new slang word of the decade?

  51. 1) I’m surprised no one said There Will Be Blood. though Eternal Sunshine and Amelie are both great movies.

  52. 1. LOTR and Hotel Rwanda
    2. I found $10 on the ground when I was a kid. It was a big deal at the time.
    4. Went to Disney World and the Kennedy Space Center (Almost saw a launch but it was delayed )

  53. 1. Eternal Sunshine
    2. I found a bag of weed on the ground walking home from a seven elven around two in the morning. I know that person had a crappy night when he told his friends.
    3. A pitcher named Steve Carlton won 300 games.
    5. Best political coup

  54. There will be blood. definately. My all time favorite. i love paul thomas anderson. dammit. damn that beautiful man. (i’m a guy and i’m not gay)

  55. 1. Idiocracy. At first impression it’s just a stupid comedy, but the more you think about it, the more you realize what a brilliant social commentary it is.

    2. Digging in my yard as a kid, I found a 2-inch iron figure of an English bulldog. I used to make up stories about how it got there.

    3. Filbert Bayi, taking track and field by storm.

    4. Taught summer school.

  56. 1. Eternal Sunshine – Best movie about relationships I have ever seen.
    2. Hahaha David…I too found a bag of weed, partially buried in the sand, in a tunnel along my old jogging route.
    3. Farming techniques have pheasant populations down in South Dakota (where I grew up)
    4. I got my first professional massage. My new vice.
    5. Best viral videos and their sociocultural significance.

  57. 3. Gaylord Perry wins his 300th game

    4. I went skydiving!!

  58. 1. I agree with whoever said Mean Girls. I don’t watch a lot of movies, which means that I REALLY don’t re-watch a lot of movies, but I’ve seen that one at least 10 times now.

    3. Magic Johnson. In the super short-shorts of the day!

    4. Caught the bouquet at a wedding for the first time. Getting married in just over a month, so it was my last chance! (No, I didn’t dive/claw/knock gals over to get it either.)

    5. Best new book of the decade? New food product?

  59. Best picture was a bizarre France-Quebec cartoon collaboration, The Triplets of Belleville. It is hilarious and unique. See it.

  60. @ladygreynorway :

I’ll give you WONDER BOYS, if only for the yumminess that is ‘Grady Tripp’ ( a pink chenille robe never looked so darn good!;-))

  61. Don’t know WHICH movie I would consider the BEST of the Aughts, but Ripley’s Game (2002)is a really good movie with John Malkovich playing Patricia Highsmith’s ‘Tom Ripley’… probably the closest to how I see the character.

  62. The Aughts aren’t over yet…I’m really looking forward to The Road. Oh, and the best movie of the 90’s was Slingblade, followed by Pulp Fiction and Saving Private Ryan. Goodfellas maybe a cool 4th.

  63. I’m not sure what I’d call the “best” movie of the aughts. I did love both “Children of Men” and “V for Vendetta,” but I kinda like apocalyptic films. If I had to vote for “most entertaining” film of the aughts, I’d say “Grindhouse.” Yes, I know it’s two movies in one, but I see (or hear) something new every time I watch them.

  64. 1- The Day Watch.

  65. Sandy, I love the Grindhouse movies as one, too. Cause that’s how they were presented in the theater, which is the temple to which that endeavor worshipped.

  66. 1. I think it’s “Avatar”. It’s going to premiere later this year & James Cameron, the director, claimed it to be the film of the decade. But for me, it’s the Harry Potter series.

  67. 2. My Grandmother is a war bride from London who was swept off her feet by an American soldier and brought back to the states where they raised a family. My grandfather died before my parents met, so all we had were stories. One day we decided to break the lock on an old cabinet in Grandmother’s basement and discovered twelve letters he had written home from the war, outlining his entire courtship of Grandmother in two-week intervals. Having never met him face-to-face, these letters gave me a chance to get to know my grandfather in his own words.

  68. 1. Lord of the Rings trilogy. Every aspect of the films (directing, acting, costuming, music, lighting, etc.) was perfect and they stand as an unprecedented, beautiful piece of artistic triumph.

  69. 1. I saw “Amelie” and “Milk” suggested up above–two choices I’d definitely second! Also: Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. Call me a nerd (heck, it’s probably not even that good a movie) but I adore it.

    2. Best thing I ever found: my SSN. When I was filling out all my college application paperwork last fall, I kept putting the same nine digits down. I was quite sure it was my social, but hadn’t double-checked since memorizing it several years ago. This feeling of foreboding grew a bit stronger with every application, until I finally went absolutely bats*** and dug up all my paperwork. It was quite a relief to discover I’d been right.

    3. My favorite headline is The Philippines: Is Imelda a Shoe-In?

    4. I’ve done a lot of new things this summer–mostly traveling to new places. The worst? Tried a fried clam. I’ve been a vegetarian since I was thirteen and had never had one. Now, I can check that one off the bucket list.

    5. Hm… perhaps “Best Twitter Update?”
    Or not. :P

  70. Movie: Anything that involves Tarantino!

Found: While walking along the beach on Thetis Island my 6 year old found a vibrator. Complete with barnacles. Ouch!

    First: Got fancy acrylic nails!

  71. 1. I’m shooting for “Nightmare Before Christmas”

    2. coming home from a babysitting job I followed a trail of dollar bills. I ended up having close to $20, which still went somewhere back in the 80’s

    3. I’ve got Tony Conigliaro with a black eye

    4. Became the main support of my family.

    5. Web site

  72. 1. There’s a lot of movies that come to mind:
    Spirited Away
    Knocked Up (guilty pleasure)
    Persepolis
    Milk
There Will Be Blood (Jonny Greenwood’s score was awesome!)

  73. Ugh to Dancer in the Dark, Lars Von Trier, how depressing :P I think one of the more impressive movies of the decade would have to be Russian Ark (2002). It was a 90 minute long piece done in one take. NO EDITS, amazing really.

This summer was the first time I was ever in a golf tournament. I don’t really golf, maybe 4 times a year (outside mini golfing of course ;D). On one of the holes was Women’s longest drive, somehow I managed to win. I think I only hit the ball 190 yards, but it was one of the few that stayed the fairway which was the only reason it was the winner. Still pretty cool, won a fancy putter for it.

    re-captcha: 186 prequels
    ^^hmmmm…..

  74. one time i got this special art pen with a very narrow tip. to try it out i took a dollar bill and filled in the 1 on the upper right corner with red ink. i spent the bill. 2 or 3 years later i bought gas and got the bill back in change. i was freaked – i thought there must be a reason. so i played the first 3 digits of the bill and won the lottery that evening.

  75. 1. Like others, I love Eternal Sunshine, Lost in Translation, Amelie and Spirited Away. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Kill Bill 1 & 2 and Waking Life are also favorites of mine. And even if it’s not the best, you’ve gotta give Old School a nod for most quotable movie of the decade.

  76. 1. a tie between 28 Days Later and Shaun of the Dead

    4. joined a little Taiko (Japanese drums) group called Live Free ODaiko (big drum)in June and played in a PARADE, and everywhere else people will let us play ever since! I am totally hooked!!
