Smile, perverts — you’re on the internet

holla.jpgHollaback, y’all! That’s exactly what a blog-minded group of activist ladies in the Big Apple did: sick of being harassed by letchy men on the street — who seemed to operate with total impunity — they decided to do something about it, and started Hollabacknyc. Whenever a catcall, rude remark or indecently-exposed bit of male anatomy came their way, they whipped out their camera phones, snapped a picture of the offender, and posted it on their site for the world to see.

After some good word-of-mouth and laudatory human-interest writeups in newspapers of note, the Hollaback phenomenon took off. Now there’s a Hollaback site for a dozen US cities and Canada, as well. Posts include first-person accounts of the harassment, and when possible, pictures of the perps. Here’s just one great example:

“Working as a waitress, I put up with all sorts of crap from sleazebag men. Here is a prime example – luckily I had my camera/phone handy. I could hear these two saying vulgar things and laughing as soon as they sat down.

Me: “What can I get you?”
Creep in the green hat: “How about you, sweetheart?”
Nauseating laughter.

So I gave them some of me – a big loogie at the bottom of their beers.”

  1. I think it may be difficult for these poor female victims of normal male behavior to prove that someone in a photo has done somethig offensive, just because they have shot a photo of someone sitting at a table.

Reading her objective description of things like laughter as “Nauseating laughter”, it is pretty clear that the writer has some issues that she shouldn’t carry with her to work.

Hopefully someone will make a website with photos of women who spit into people’s beers so that the public can be warned.

And yes, I too think men who make comments such as the men in the article are morons. They deserve to be told to shut up. They do perhaps not deserve to be publically humiliated as some sort of sex offenders.

  2. So a guy makes an off-color, rude remark and that gets him spit (with all of the germs, bacteria, viruses and random other microbes crawling in this girl’s mouth) in his beer. Who violated who exactly here?

I say she’s lucky these guys do not find her site, realize it was them that were assaulted and go after this girl and her job for god knows how many violations of the health code, penal code and at least 2 or 3 civil torts.

You sure showed them who was more civilized.

  3. Sounds like BOTH sides are wrong here. The phrase “Two Wrongs Don’t make a Right” seems to apply here.

The males where being bozos & this “lady” was being crude.

    People need to grow up.
