How about the 1906 murder/scandal involving Evelyn Nesbit,architect Stanford White and Nesbit’s jealous. husband Harry K. Thaw. Or am I simply thinking of the song from the show “Ragtime?”

I think the kidnapping of Lindbergh’s baby should be up there. There really should have been a top twenty or so. I think Hauptman was innocent.

Ahem… what about the trial of Dan White, in the late 70s, who claimed the “Twinkie Defense” and got only a few years for gunning down San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, a verdict that caused the infamous White Night Riots?
