This is the first in a series of movie quote quizzes. I’ve plucked lines from three movies: The Goonies (1985), Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) and Stand By Me (1986). Your job is to decide which film the quote is from. If you’ve got a suggestion for another group of movies for a future quiz, leave us a comment!
Take the Quiz: ’80s Movie Quotes
do a brat pack movie-off!

I’ll second Caitlin’s motion.
I’m thinking a Brreakfast Club/Sixteen Candles/St Elmo’s Fire trifecta should be interesting.
A David Lynch three pack would be great: Blue Velvet/Lost Highway/Wild At Heart
Pirate Fest!: Pirates of The Carribean/Cutthroat Island/Against All Flags.
Segal/Van Damme/Schwartenegar: Out for Justice/Time Cop/Total Recall
The possibilities are endless.

I thought #10 was said by one of the boys about crossing the railroad bridge, which they almost get across before the train comes.

Wendy–That’s the way I remember it, too.

Have to do action stars of the 80s. Arnold, Ford, Stallone. Each individually or mixed and matched.

Big Lebowski, O Brother Where Art Thou, Raising Arizona, The Ladykillers, and/or Burn After Reading; basically, the Coen Brothers’ comedies.

Kate and Wendy, you are right.

10/11
Missed the last one.
It’s funny, I was just posting about “Stand By Me” yesterday.

Wendy and Kate- You two are most likely correct. My memory of the exact scene is a little hazy, though I’m sure the quote is accurate.
Luckily, our readership is keen enough to catch missteps of this nature. Virtual high-five to you both.

8 of 11, all 3 missed were Goonies quotes, which just didn’t do it for me.
3 Quentin Tarantino movies. It might be kinda hard to find ones obscure enough, but he has a very distinct dialogue style. You could go to other movies he’s written (True Romance, From Dusk Til Dawn, Four Rooms “The Man From Hollywood” segment)
Also, Kevin Smith movies. Clerks 1 and 2, there are some great geek conversations about Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc. Mallrats has a lot of allusions to classic movies (Butch and Sundance among others), plus Silent Bob usually has a speech at the end of each that makes a point, and discerning which speech is from which movie could be tough.

I thought number 10 was said when they cross the creek and get leeches.

How about 3 baseball movies? Something like Field of Dreams, The Natural, and Bull Durham?
posted by Paul on 9-22-2009 at 2:54 pm
The Austin Powers trilogy seems like a natural (if slightly esoteric) choice.

Do it again!! Do it again!
LOVING Johnny’s suggestion of Tarantino flicks, EMStoveken’s Lynch triad, and Joel’s Coen Bros. concept.
To go with the childhood-love theme, though, I suggest Dark Crystal – Labyrinth – Neverending Story.
Or, howsabout Heathers – Mean Girls – oh, and maybe Welcome to the Dollhouse?
