THE SOLUTION:

John bought the bananas first, followed by the carrots, the corn, the lemons, and the tangerines.

  1. Whee! That one was fun and easy!

  2. Either I am some kind of super-genius (not likely) or… is the answer given in the list of items? They’re in order, and the clues seemed ridiculously easy. I’m curious because: a)I saw U2 last night so my ears are ringing and that’s distracting; b)I have a hangover; and c)I got 4 hours of sleep. Could this be the recipe for serious genius-hood?

  3. Ha ha ha! Very funny! You guys rock!

  4. The produce items in the question are in alphabetical order. If he bought them in that same order… it’s just a fluke. :)

  5. An easy one for friday or did you forget to scramble things up a bit? Either way have a good weekend Flossers!!

  6. I was able to do it without a graph and I’m very much hungover as well. hmm…

  7. For those of you who solved this while not at 100%, you have to realize that I’ve spent most of my waking hours the last two weeks finishing up the fact-checking articles in the upcoming (Nov/Dec) issue of our nifty print magazine.

So although it wasn’t from anything mind-altering, I certainly felt hung-over when I put this puzzle together last night. Maybe that’s the connection…

  8. Oh, I like it when you throw me an easy one once in a while. It’s like watching Teen Jeopardy… it makes me feel a little smarter, at least for that day. ;-)

  9. Why did you need our help? You already put them in order for us :)

  10. It seems like an odd combination of things to buy. Is John, perchance, pregnant?

  11. Isn’t corn a grain?

  12. Corn is not a vegetable.

  13. I agree, that was easy and no grid necessary. They are never that easy for me. I too am very much hungover. Guess that is key to brillance

  14. oops, for got the second “i” in brilliance. perhaps i am not so brilliant after all

  15. if “summer squash” was used instead of the controversial corn, the puzzle would have laid out more neatly. corn is more popularly known as a vegetable, but by the botanical definition it is a fruit. since this is a trivia site the distinction should have been made.

  16. I am neither hungover, nor do i care beans about corn–I, however, must also be a brilliant genius, since I got this one WAY too easily! Nice to know I’m starting the weekend on such a lofty level!!

  17. Botanically, you’re right, corn is not a vegetable. But the public certainly includes it in that group, as would the produce section of a supermarket.

  18. That was fun & easy – didn’t need a grid. I didn’t realize they were in the same order until I saw the comments!

Summer Squash is a technically a fruit also so that would have the same result. (So are avocados, eggplants, tomatoes, etc.)

Doesn’t matter though since we tend to think of both as veggies!

  19. Add me to the gang of hangover sufferers who figured this one out easily. I too thought I was some kind of super genius until I actually came and read the comments…=)
