Friday Happy Hour: I Have a (Recurring) Dream

Every Friday, I post a series of unrelated questions meant to spark conversation in the comments. Answer one, answer all, respond to someone else’s reply, whatever you want. Very casual. On to this week’s topics of discussion…

dream-bubble1. I’ve been having some bizarre dreams of late. Michael Jackson, alive and well and dancing, explaining to me why he’d never want to own an expansion NFL franchise. An elderly woman, small and pushy, trying to cut me in line at the supermarket. My dog, loud and whiny, deciding she needs to go for a walk at 3:44am (wait, that last one was real).

But for years, not being able to find my shoes has been a common theme in my dreams. Sometimes I’m at work, barefoot. Other times, my lack of proper footwear keeps me on the sidelines during an important sporting event—in these dreams, I’m occasionally involved in high-stakes high school football reunion games or pick-up basketball scrimmages with celebrities and historical figures. Those guys are brutal if you don’t bring your shoes.

These dreams aren’t exactly the stuff of blockbusters, and until three seconds ago, I’d never done any research on what they might mean (if you don’t consider Googling “dream interpretation shoes” and clicking on one link research, the streak continues). Here’s what I found: “If your forget your shoes, then it suggests that you are leaving restraints behind you. You are refusing to conform to some idea or attitude.”

I’m not buying it. I think I’m just craving a shoe tree. Do you have any weird recurring dreams?

2. A reader suggested this next question in a comment, but I can’t remember what post she was commenting on, and I’m not entirely sure I have the right reader. Let’s give it a whirl anyway: what movie that everyone else seemed to love did you really not care for? (I believe this was posed by Michigan Mom.)

Monument_Park3. Anyone doing anything fun this weekend? My wife and I will be making our first pilgrimage to the new Yankee Stadium on Sunday to see the Yanks-Red Sox game, courtesy of my new brother-in-law Keith. Yanks-Sox tickets are absolutely the coolest groomsman gift you can get…

4. …but then again, maybe you can top it. What’s the best (or worst) groomsman or bridesmaid gift you’ve received?

  1. 1. I have a recurring dream involving feet, too, only mine is about getting my feet washed — often by force. I haven’t been to church regularly since 8th grade (I’m 36), but I have to assume it has something to do with religion.

    2. Wall-E. I found it pretentious.

    3. Bachelor party for a guy who would tell you he’s not very fun. The best man doesn’t seem to be much fun, either (I’ve never met him, but his emails about this party have drained the excitement from everyone).

    4. When my cousin got married, I was one of the groomsmen. He went to a garage sale the day before the wedding and picked out ridiculous (but hilarious and spot on) gifts for us. I was in law school at the time, so he bought me a book called (something like) “How to Sue People and Win Big Money!”

  2. 1. I tend to just throw things into my dreams that I experienced that day, but when they’re all out of context & mashed together it’s weird.

    2. Good question! One that springs to my mind is “Burn After Reading”. Just didn’t really tickle my fancy like it did everyone else. *shrugs*

    Recaptcha: wavelet $154,010,444

  3. 3 – SO INCREDABLY JEALOUS

Maybe I’ll go and see if I can get a scapled pair for under $50. HAHAHAHAHA

    GO YANKS!

ReCaptcha: Thudding Sikorski’s – my new favorite band

  4. RE #1:

I don’t really have any recurring dreams any more but my dreams are definitely influenced by what I might be reading before bed, especially if I have problems going to sleep and end up reading for quite a while before I finally pass out, so I have had some very strange dreams that mix my life or past or my own issues on my mind with the latest thriller, hah.

I do have alot of common THEMES like my son being in trouble or lost and I can’t find him, get to him, etc…

    RE #3:

On Saturday morning, my son and I are doing our duty in front of the local grocery store to sell Cub Scout popcorn for a couple hours and then my son has a bday party on Sunday for a boy in his class.

    RE #4:

    I’ve never been in a wedding… I guess I can say I’m always a bride, never a bride’s maid, haahah.

  5. 1. I have a recurring dream that I’m in my house–well, in my dream it’s my house and it’s like I’ve lived there for years, but it bears no resemblance to my real house or any house I’ve ever been in. The house either has some incredibly fantastic/absurd feature like a bathroom with 5 tubs and 10 toilets or it has a secret hidden room that I’m finding for the first time, and the room is gorgeous but quite absurd.

    2. Yep, I’m the one who suggested the “movies everyone loves but you don’t” question. I already gave my top answer–Toy Story 2. I’ve got a long list of such movies, and I feel like I must be a freak when I’m the only one who doesn’t like a particular movie! I can’t wait to see others’ answers.

  6. 1) I had a recurring dream when I was a kid (around 7-10) that my family and I were in a car and driving and the car went off a bridge- it was actually quite tramatic for me. I had forgotten about this dream until I was 23 and driving to Tenessee with some friends, and encountered the bridge from my dreams! I had a slight panic attack until we got over the bridge, but was
    fine after that.

    2) Wall-E (still can’t make it past the first 15 min), A Clockwork Orange, random others

    4) I heard about a wedding where the groomsmen recieved flasks, a very common nice gift; but for this wedding they came prefilled with alcohol- the groomsmen were drunk for the whole wedding!

  7. After repeatedly dreaming about my teeth falling out, I did some research and found out that it is a pretty common dream. It is just SO realistic in my mind: one by one, they drop from my mouth as I put my fingers to my lips to try to hold them in place. I have this dream when parts of my life are seeming out of my control.

  8. 2. There’s Something About Mary (or any movie that has Ben Stiller in it)

    3. Going to the National Book Festival in DC, where I’ll get to meet John Grisham, John Irving and James Patterson, among many other authors.

  9. Ooh, fun stuff! My degree is in psychology so I’m pre-wired to love dream interpretation discussions…

I’ve always thought that dreams about showing up naked, without shoes, without a wallet, etc. meant that your subconscious is worried about not being prepared for something. A big presentation at work/school, a trip, a big life change… something along those lines.

My recurring dream/nightmare always follows the same theme. I’m back in my high school Pom Pon (dance team) days. We’re about to go on at half-time, and I haven’t learned the dance! Sometimes it’s a variation where I’m the only one who doesn’t have the right outfit for the performance. And in a different version of what I would call the same theme, I’m about to go on stage and sing for a crowd, but haven’t learned the words to the song.

The best “why do we dream” theory I have ever heard was one I remember reading in Time magazine a few years back. Shamefully I forget the author, but the theory was that our dreams are somewhat of a “dress rehearsal”- meant to condition the mind and body to react to scenarios that we consciously or subconsciously fear. I can’t give the author much justice by trying to explain it myself, but I was fascinated with his theories on the relationships between nightmares and scary movies, as well as trauma and recurring nightmares in PTSD sufferers.

Oooh, and I hated Benjamin Button when I saw it in the theater. My buns were asleep and I was sooo bored after the first 2 hours, I was miserable.

I’ve never received a terrible bridesmaid gift, but my bf once received a typical groomsman gift of a silver flask, beautifully engraved with his last name… misspelled.

  10. Michigan Mom — Thanks for coming forward! I’d written that question down in my notebook when I saw your comment, but failed to mention who had posed it.

Although I’m not sure “everybody” liked this movie, my answer to that one is ‘Mulholland Drive,’ which I saw in Los Angeles on vacation back in 2002. The room I was watching it in was filled with six or seven people who’d already seen and loved it in theaters, and they would pause to dissect nearly every scene. It was like having the director’s commentary on, only instead of hearing from the director, you had to listen to a bunch of drunk, unemployed people spew rubbish. Fellow _flosser Brett Savage was there. Brett, am I remembering this wrong? Wasn’t that the worst?

  11. 2. Gladiator

  12. 1. I used to have a recurring dream when I was a kid. If I had the dream, I knew I had strep throat. It’s the only time I ever had the dream. Very bizarre and freaky and scared me so bad every time I woke up crying, and with a huge fever. So I am sure that was fever induced.
    2. big screen – The Gods Must Be Crazy (how stupid was that?) and theater – Cats. I just really didn’t enjoy it. I know… I am the only person who saw it that would say that, but then I don’t really like cats generally.
    3. Wish you had asked this question last friday, because last weekend we bought a condo. This weekend we are going to stay home and not spend money so we can afford the condo!
    4. Presents?! I was supposed to get presents?! I was in two weddings and received no gift. But that’s okay, because I really wasn’t expecting one. I think that trend came along later. (Remember, I am OLD!)

  13. 1. I also have the theme of my teeth falling out. It doesn’t always happen the same way… usually it starts with them wiggling which is freaking terrifying for some reason. I always wake up in a panic, convinced my teeth have fallen out.

    2. SpiderMan. All of them. Though I hope no one loved the 3rd one.

  14. 1. I haven’t really had a recurring dream lately. As a child I had a recurring dream of a giant red monster with the Sun in his throat. He would try to eat me all the times. He would pop out of strange places like a hole in a golf course or when a friend would open up their bedroom door. I believe it’s the reason I’m now currently terrified of Putt Putt courses and friends bedrooms.

    2. Fight Club. It just didn’t speak to me. And I figured out the twist while they were on the plane. (Normally I’m happy when I can figure it out so soon, but for some reason I didn’t care for it) My good friend from college is still pissed at me that I don’t like it because he loves to analyze and talk about it. I’m just not interested.

    3. Nothing and very happy about it.

    4. I’ve been a groomsman many times and most of it was run of the mill stuff. But my buddy Jon (the same college friend who loves Fight Club from “2″) gave me a beer stein commemorating the Pittsburgh Penguins Stanley Cup win last spring. That was pretty cool.

  15. 1) I have the same dream approximate once a week. I am in high school and I can’t get my locker open. My schedule is inside and I don’t know where I am supposed to be and the 1st bell is about to ring. I finally go to the office to get my schedule printed (again!) and I am off to my Math of some sort class. I finally sit down and open my book only to find out that it is a Science book. And from the look on the teachers face this happen quite frequently to me. I’m not sure what happens next because either it ends or I wake up at this exact same point every time.

    2) I don’t watch movies often, but everyone I talked to raved about Napoleon Dynamite and I thought it was dumb.

    3) Today is the start of Oktoberfest in La Crosse, WI. I will be on the parade route, Bloody in hand, by 9am tomorrow morning.

  16. I’ve written a story about my recurring dream called “Geneva Street”. Rather than posting it here, this is the link:

    http://www.emptyroomslonelycountries.com/samples/geneva-street/

As for a movie everyone loved, for the life of me, I didn’t like WALL-E. I wanted to, but it just didn’t work for me.

  17. 2. Transformers. My nephew insisted I watch it because I would love it. Instead, I was bored silly, left in the middle to go play with the dogs which was infinitely more enjoyable!
    3. I’m with Nathan- nothing and loving it
    4. Cheesy fake pearl necklaces that are long gone!

  18. 1. When I am really stressed, my dream self always goes back to my days waiting tables. And in the dreams, it is never that the restaurant is really busy, it is that I have 2 tables very far from each other and no matter what I di, I can never seem to get to one from the other.

    2. Easy–Titanic. Absolutely hated that movie.

    3. This weekend I am taking the kids to the rescheduled Taiwanese Dragon Boat races, which is always fun, and makes for great photos.

    4. Haven’t received too many of those–none of my friends seem to get married. But my sister is getting married next year, so we’ll see!

  19. I can’t think of any well-loved movies that I don’t like, though there are many “popular” films that turn my stomach. My aunt and uncle Hate Forrest Gump (yes, with a capital “H”) and my mother and sister get very annoyed when I watch The Princess Bride. I think this is SO strange; how could you dislike these treats?

This weekend I am going mushroom picking–for the kind I like to put in a Japanese rice dish, not the other kind!

  20. 1. Being stuck in an elevator that is falling, or the other one is forgetting the combination to a high school locker.

    2. Clockwork Orange. I felt the same way about the book.

  21. 1. I have two recurring dreams…
The first involves a bridge that I am driving on that grows steeper and steeper as I drive and eventually I am totally vertical, like a roller coaster…

The other involves being on a beach, all of the water being sucked into the ocean, and a huge tidal wave towering over my head perfectly vertical and lingering over about to crash…those dreams suck.

    2. Babylon

    3. Going to watch Air Dogs…the “flying disc” catching dogs, the county fair is this weekend as well.

    4. Worst groomsmen gift…we had to buy a suit for the wedding, like $300 and the groom gave us the tie. Thanks for nothing!

I gave my groomsmen their bow ties and cumberbuns…but they wore black tuxedo’s, everyone owned one so it was no big deal.

  22. 2. I’m going to spin this. A movie I liked that no one else did that I know of: Castaway with Tom Hanks. I LOVE that movie, and no one else seems to.

    reCaptcha: fecal 13…ew

  23. I have a reoccurring theme in my dreams. I am in college. It is a different campus in each dream and takes place in the dorm and in the class room. The connection between each dream is the class schedule, I don’t have one and I find myself looking for my next class location. I never find it and spend the time looking around campus or in the dorm room complaining about my roommates. Had one last night, again.

  24. 1. I have a recurring dream that it is the first day of school and I don’t have my class schedule. I wander through the halls trying to figure out where I’m supposed to be. Sometimes I’m in college and sometimes I’m in high school.

    2. Benjamin Button. Too long, too sappy, too much Brad Pitt.

    3. I’m going to watch some MST3K and read Wicked. Fun for an introvert!!

    4. The custom designed bracelet from my best friend was probably the best.

  25. I thought Napoleon Dynamite was a waste of my time.

  26. 2. 300 bored me, I couldn’t even finish watching it, and I thought I’d really like it.

  27. 1. When I was a kid (age 6 or so), I had a recurring dream in which I was trapped inside an inflatable red house (you know, like those inflatable castles? Except a house). A Nazi soldier was guarding the door, and he had a red kite that was alive. The kite had an angry face and would fly itself down to the window and taunt me that it was free and I was trapped. WEIRD. And why all the red things (and the Nazi) I will never know.

Michigan Mom: your dream is COOL! I wish I could have that dream!

    2. National Lampoon Christmas Vacation. I will leave the room if someone puts that movie on; it’s like nails on a chalkboard to me.

    3. Enjoying the cooler weather by taking our dogs to the park. Really looking forward to it!

    4. I received a little velvet-lined silver jewelry box with my name engraved on the top. It was simple but classy, and I still use it.

  28. Owen, that is crazy – we posted the same recurring dream at almost the same time! Yours wasn’t showing when I started typing mine.

  29. 1) i often have a dream i’m being chased, which is pretty cliche, but during the chase i can’t get any traction running. So i use my hands and grip the grass and pull myself along the terrain while i run.
    2) I’m with Shelly. Napoleon Dynamite sucks!
    3) I promised my dad i’d go home and meet a lot of his classmates from highschool. He’s hosting his 30 year reunion. wish me luck..

  30. 1. Many times I dream I can hover around, not fly but hover, and really enjoy it.

    2. Maybe it is just me, but almost every movie that won an Oscar for best movie. I think my taste is not as refined as the taste of the member of the academy

May I suggest another question? what about a movie you really liked but nobody else seemed to enjoy. For me it was the last Harry Potter movie, none of my friends seemed to like it, but I loved it

  31. For a year or two in college I was plagued by a recurring dream in which one of my male friends, a different one every time and never anyone I had a crush on, would ask me to marry him. I would say yes and then recant – a few days later, at the rehearsal dinner, one time at the altar. I hated this dream because I would inevitably feel guilty all the next day, even though I knew it was just a dream.

  32. 1. The most common recurring theme in my dreams is contorted architecture or roadways. There will typically be lots of convoluted bridges involved. When it’s not a freeway system, it might be a subway system, or an indoor shopping mall, or an impossibly huge hotel atrium, or a downtown skyway system. Lately, convoluted airport terminals have been showing up a lot for me. The second most common recurring theme is bathrooms — usually ridiculously complicated ones, or hard to navigate, or partly broken (keep checking stalls until finding a toilet that isn’t clogged), or abruptly way less private than I’d really like.

    2. Titanic. Never before have I rooted so hard for an iceberg.

    3. Inlaws are coming to visit! Yay!

    4. Best was a lovely pearl necklace from my cousin. Couldn’t really pick a “worst”; they were all thoughtful.

  33. 1) I have two recurring dreams. A) For some reason I’m on a tour of a dinosaur exhibit in a public museum with Kimmy Gibbler from Full house. The tour requires you to sit in roller coaster cars to be guided through the exhibit (yet it remains on the ground). Also, part of the “ride” is that you shoot the dinosaurs with a lazer gun. The raptors somehow come alive, an alarm goes off and we need to run from the museum before the doors are blocked off by giant stone blocks decending from the ceiling. I get out but Kimmy falls and I drag her out from beneath the stone just prior to being crushed. (Weird, huh? Same exact dream every time) B)My teeth become the consistancy of butter.. I chomp down on something and they squish.

2)Independence Day . . . pretty much anything with Will Smith, but especially that one.

3)I’m throwing a dinner party tonight, attending a bday party tomorrow and playing kickball in Brooklyn on Sunday.

4)A “Lush” brand kit of yummy smelling bath bombs.

@ Jason: That stadium is MASSIVE. It almost felt like being in a cartoon because everything was so oversized. PS: Go Yankees!

@Shelly: JEALOUS! La Crosse has the best bloody marys on the face of the earth. I’ve searched NYC for 4 years and am still to find a bar that doesn’t completely screw them up. Hello?! Where’s my beer chaser?

  34. 1. Mine is similar to Michigan Mom’s where I’m in a house I’ve lived in for years, but I’ve never seen anything like it in real life. Only the dreams usually turn dark, I go into the ‘secret’ or ‘forbidden’ wing of the house where everything is all gothic and victorian and freaky. Twice I’ve dreamt about meeting a little girl ghost in one of the rooms. Usually thought, I dream about making beds in the secret rooms. It’s a very strange dream.

    2. I also hated Fight Club and Titanic. But I get the most crap for hating The Notebook.

3.A lot of nothing, we’re broke right now.

    4. Mostly I’ve gotten ugly jewelry I never see again. But my best friend got me a cute little dragon figurine (I collect them) that I just adore.

  35. 1. When I was a kid, I had this recurring dream (nightmare?) that I was on my Hippity Hop and couldn’t make it turn around so I could go back home.

    2. The Matrix — I have tried several times to watch this movie, and have yet to make it through the first 20 minutes. I have given up.

    3. Buying a lawn mower.

    4. Worst bridesmaid gift — a purse mirror (after spending $200+ and a travel weekend, I think I deserved more than a $10 mirror, but that’s just me). Best bridesmaid gift — a Pottery Barn gift card from my sister-in-law.

  36. 1. I have 2 fairly regularly reoccuring dreams. First one–I can breath underwater..I’ll be swimming in a pool and just discover that I can sit on the bottom and breath. The other is being attacked by a bear, or having to defend someone from being attacked by a bear. I always win, but it’s scary.

    2. Little Miss Sunshine

    3. Running a 3k race and/or attending the birth of my 2nd son, providing the wife (who is almost a week overdue) goes into labor.

    4. Really only been given the standard gifts…monogrammed beer glasses, silver beer can coozie (maybe I’ve only been in alcoholic weddings :) )

  37. Okay, I’ll probably get punched, but I hate “The Princess Bride.” There I said it.

Besides celebrating Yom Kippur with my family, I’m going to the Baltimore Book Festival tonight.

  38. 2. Just last night I rented Observe and Report after hearing from everyone I know that it’s terrific. Hated it, and I’m a huge fan of Seth Rogen.

  39. 1. the first half I’m burying bodies, the second half is watching people innocently digging holes where I buried bodies and finding body parts. Me knowing that it’s only a matter of time before I’m found out.

    2. It’s a tie: Heat, Way of the Gun (I’d throw in Titanic, but clearly I’m not alone)

    4. Coolest – A 9″ Survival knife with my initials on the blade (I swear it has nothing to do with my dreams).

  40. 1. I keep dreaming of a cabin in the woods that is filled with trinkets, like an antique store I guess.

    2. Tropic Thunder. Had to watch it a second time to confirm that I didn’t like it because I couldn’t understand the appeal.

    3. I’m starting puppy obedience classes with my new little Boxer. I don’t know if this will be fun or not.

    4. I once got a bathrobe with my name monogrammed on the bottom.

  41. 1) I worked for the same retail company for 9 years. The last 2-3 years, I had a dream about the store 5-6 nights out of the week. The worst often involved people from headquarters coming out when my store wasn’t ready for them. The weirdest was when my entire staff became the bridge crew of the star ship Enterprise and I (as store manager) was captain. I kid you not

    2) Borat – couldn’t get past the first 5-10 minutes. Juno – boring. Sixth Sense – I waited too long to see it. Everyone told me I’d never guess the ending, it was too unpredictable…which made it predictable

    3) It’s Pirate Weekend at the Maryland Renaissance Festival! ARRRR!!

    4) Never been a bridesmaid. When I was 7 I was a flower girl and got a really beautifully illustrated copy of the Secret Garden – does that count?

  42. 1. I have the teeth dream too. They get loose and then fall out. Now that I have kids I dream at least 2 times a week that I have misplaced the babies.

    2. Everyone I know thinks Wedding Crashers was the funniest thing ever. Same with Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers. I thought all of them were subpar. Also, I don’ t understand the big deal with Casablanca and I though Wall-E was drivel.

    3. Hope to go to the beach this weekend before the fall weather settles in. Also meeting up with some girlfirends from high school I recently reconnected with.

    4. I can’t remember any of the wedding gifts I received. I am sure that faux pearls were involved.

  43. 1. I have a recurring dream in which it’s the end of the semester, and I realize that I am enrolled in a class that I have not attended all semester long. It’s always some sort of a math class (I was an art major), and it’s usually taught by one of my high school math teachers. I always wake up in a panic.

    2. Wall-e. I liked the first part where he was alone on the earth the absolute best, but couldn’t get into the rest of it.

    3. Going to the Alabama-Arkansas game.

  44. 1. When I was little I had the same dream everytime I was sick…my sister, grandmother, and sister where rolling giant stone balls around (think 100x their size!) in a huge warehouse trying to crush me! They never succeeded!

    2. \Talladega Nights\. I had seen this awhile after it came out. I think everyone else over-hyped it so much I was expecting something beyond amazing. Another one that comes to mind is \Juno\.

    3. Family party and shopping!

    4. As a lady, I have only received jewelry (which I am suppose to wear in the wedding) as a bridesmaid gift. I promise to think of something more original when I get married!

  45. 1 – The past few weeks I’ve had dreams that I had bugs crawling under my skin and I had to cut my arm open to get them out. It’s gross.
I also generally have the “I forgot the lines” sort of dream before an audition. Last night, for instance, I was half-way through reciting a Shakespearean monologue and I couldn’t remember the rest so I started singing “Little Drummer Boy”. Yep!

2 – I absolutely hate Super Troopers. It is the stupidest movie I’ve ever seen in my life.

3 – My friend is coming into town and asked that I bake her a whale cake. “Nothing too fancy,” she said, “just plain vanilla and shaped like a whale.” Expect to see it on Cakewrecks soon enough…

  46. 1. The recurring dream I had as a child is too long and involved to detail here, but it always ended with a huge zombie-like giant chasing after me. I’d pull out a large samurai-type sword and cut his head off, but he’d still follow me so I’d end up having to disembowel him. Pleasant, huh? I eventually figured out, though, that I only had the dream when my dad was gone on a business trip. So there must have been some weird subconscious thing going on.

My adult recurring dream theme is similar to Calli’s, except that when I start dreaming about nasty bathrooms I know it’s time to wake up and use a real bathroom . . .

    2. The only movie I’ve seen in the theater that I’ve checked my watch throughout is Star Wars: Episode II. I guess it wasn’t universally loved, though, so maybe it doesn’t count.

    3. 23rd Annual Texas General Land Office Adopt-A-Beach Fall Cleanup. Whew, that’s a mouthful.

    4. The last wedding I was in the bride gave us all canvas bags embroidered with our monograms. I thought it was pretty cool since the gift was actually useful instead of jewelry that matches the bridesmaid gown but that I will never wear again.

  47. 1. I constantly dream that I need to move, but I have far too much stuff to pack. Another regular concerns someone chasing me through a convoluted house or series of buildings. And, Michigan Mom, I also dream about a strange and fantastic house…but in my dreams, it belongs to my parents, not me.

    2. “Top Gun.” After watching it, I had the distinct impression that everyone else had watched a different movie than I had.

  48. 1. I am in college, ready to graduate and it turns out I missed a class and I am told I can’t graduate.
    2. African Queen–Bogart and Hepburn, Houston directing, and I still disliked it.
    3. Recouperating from a nasty cold.
    4. The gift I got was having to pay $40-70 extra for my pink/blue/purple pastel dress with a butt bow that was a size 20. Had it been a size smaller, it would have been cheaper.

  49. I thought Knocked Up was terrible. Not funny at all, and I especially hated Charlyne Yi as the stoner girlfriend. Can’t stand her because of that role.

  50. 1 – I’ve been out of high school for 12 years (and out of college for 8), but I will still periodically dream that I’m rushing to class in HS; but not only have I not done the work, it’s the first time I’ve managed to get to the class all year and have no idea what’s going on.

2 – Anything with Cameron Diaz in it, and yes, that does include “There’s Something About Mary.”

3 – Sleeping in. After this week, that’s as exciting as it gets.

  51. 2. So many I could list here. I had to turn off Lost in Translation about 3/4 of the way through because I realized I hated the characters and and the plot and those weren’t likely to change in the remaining time. I was also told that Anchorman was the funniest! movie! of! all! time! It really! really! wasn’t!

    3. I’m going apple-picking tomorrow, which is possibly the highlight of my fall and visiting the local alpaca farm on Sunday.

  52. I really didn’t understand all the hype about Garden State. I was more entertained by the soundtrack than the movie.

  53. 1. Whenever I’m stressed out, I dream that I’m trying to get to a store, or work, or something similar, and even though I can see it, I can’t get to it.

I’ll follow every path, road and hallway that’s supposed to lead me to the right spot-but it always leads me astray and I always can’t quite get to it. It’s like being Alice in Wonderland. Very frustrating!

    2. Lost in Translation. Everyone raved about it, but to me it was just two hours of two people trading witty banter. Bored me to tears.

    3. The BF and I are going to look a new house that we really like-fingers crossed!

    4. I’m about to become a bridesmaid for the first time-fortunately, it’s my best friend’s wedding and her mother was a gemologist, so if we do get matching jewelry we know it’s going to be lovely!

  54. 2. Forest Gump, though I think other people really ruined that one for me by talking about it so much. By the time I saw it I had already heard about anything that was the least bit funny or touching, so I just didn’t care. I also don’t like Titanic, Top Gun and several others. It seems like the more hype a movie or TV show gets, the less I like it. Some I even refuse to watch simply because there is so much talk, like There’s Something About Mary or American Idol.

  55. 1) I have recurring motifs of spitting out a mouthful of bloody teeth (this one always leaves me unsettled for the rest of the day) and of walking on the beach and being dragged under the waves (but not drowning).

    2) Garden State. Lost in Translation. Juno. Happy Feet.

    3) Shopping with my mom, who’s visiting from out of town. I LOVE shopping with my mom.

4)My sister-in-law gave me a very pretty necklace that I have yet to wear. It was supposed to be for the wedding, but I opted to wear a necklace my brother had given me several years before he was married.

  56. I’ve always dislike “Its a Wonderful Life.” I just seems trite. I can’t get past it.

  57. 1. When I am stressed out, I scratch my face in my sleep. Also, I have the same dreams everyone else does about school and losing my teeth.

    2. Chicago (even though I am from Chicago) and The Thin Red Line, it got all these rave reviews and my sister and I sat through it and it was excrutiating.

    3. Cleaning my apartment to the MAX so my cat doesn’t trip over anything following her cancer surgery on Tuesday.

    4. I was given nothing, followed by a diamond necklace, followed by a $16 dollar pen and set they bought on their honeymoon. (For an out of town wedding, thanks so much. You really did me a solid.)

  58. 1. I always have a dream where a tornado is coming and when I try to run my legs get heavy and I can’t do anything but walk very slowly.

    2. Transformers – did anyone else think this movie was a super long commercial for xbox, pepsi and chevy?

    3. I got the short straw and will be working the whole weekend.

    4. I was a bridesmaid for my Brother’s wedding and all I got was a super ugly purple dress. It has since been burned!

  59. 4. I was in a wedding last month. Among other things, the bride gave all of the bridesmaids gift cards to Sephora, except for me that is. She swore she’d get me a gift card after, but hasn’t happened & I highly doubt it will. Way to thank your maid of honor!

  60. 1) I had a recurring dream that I was riding in the car with my mom, brother, and sister over a long bridge. The car would always go off the bridge, and i would be the only one to survive, because my door was unlocked. I still hate driving over bridges to this day. My best friend dreams about tornados whenever something big is about to happen, and she also dreams about people the night before they die. It’s freaky.

2)I HATED Titanic. My boyfriend at the time leaned over during the point where everyone was floating in the water and said, “Wouldn’t it be really cool if a speed boat went flying through there right now?” I thought it was hilarious.

    3)Tea party for my birthday. (I’ll be 28) :D

4)The only thing I’ve ever gotten was a pretty necklace that I had to wear with a hideous monstrosity of a dress. It was teal satin with a boat neckline and a giant black bow on the back and black roses on the sleeves. Eww!

  61. 2. The Hangover, I felt like even going into this ready for suspension of disbelief it just didn’t do it for me. I actually walked away and thought that the stuff they did was very typical for a weekend with my friends anyway.

  62. 2. Anything with Will Farrell (sp?).
If I were to ever meet him I would insist on compensation for the hours of my life lost.

  63. I used to have dreams about alligators all the time! They involved me being on a high bridge and looking down into a lake to see the gators in the murky water below. Then the bridge would collapse and I’d be in the water, knowing that alligators were everywhere but not being able to see them anymore. A worse version of the dream was being on a bridge or dock so low that it was actually a few inches under the water. Then, one night, I had a dream about an alligator resting on the shore of a clear lake, the gator was quite pretty, almost a jade green, and even seemed to be smiling. I’ve seldom had gator dreams since. It don’t know what was “resolved” in my life that made the dreams go away, but I’m thankful that I’m no longer “subconsciously suppressing” something anymore.

  64. 2. Sideways was dreadful! I wanted to poke my eyes out repeatedly while watching it.

  65. 1. I have the teeth falling out dream too! I have always had dental anxiety and when I dream that I have a loose tooth, I wake up in a complete panic.

    2. Simple. Crash. I have tried to watch it numerous times and always lose interest and fall asleep, I dont know why everyone loved it. Also most anything Jim Carey, he just annoys me.

    4. I have been a braidsmaid a few times, and none of the gifts have really been that great, I think the worst is when the bride made all the bridesmaids wear tiaras (sp?) and that was our gift. What I am 8??

  66. 1. I used to have a recurring dream that I was a vampire slayer. I was big into Buffy at the time and a huge crush on David Boreanaz (still do!).

    2. It’s a Wonderful Life – we had to watch that movie in my film class during high school and I fell asleep!

    3. Going up to my friends’ house to buy a bridesmaid dress for her wedding.

    4. Was in a wedding a 2 weeks ago and got Coach sunglasses! (And yes, I’m in back to back weddings!) I also recieved a tote bag that had my named monogrammed on it. I loved it because it was a perfect size, but I threw it in the washer when I got a stain on it and the entire seam of the bag ripped! I was so mad!

  67. R4. Yeesh, there’s a lot of vitriol in these posts, especially for a Friday afternoon. At the risk of sounding wildly self-righteous, I’m going to blow sunshine up everyone’s skirt. My parents got married sort of spur of the moment by a Justice of the Peace in Oklahoma, and my uncle was the only member of both very large families in attendance. After nearly 40 years of marriage, my sister and I are throwing them the wedding they never had, and it’s going to be a surprise so they won’t have the opportunity to spend any of their money, time, or sanity on it. My sister and I will be the bridesmaids, and the look on my parents’ faces when they walk in the church will be my priceless gift. That and the raging party afterwards.

  68. 1) I have had a series of “geographic dreams”. In these I am in my home town, but everything is turned around and these dreams keep building upon themselves. In one a local landmark is in a completely different part of town and there’s a shortcut between things that are very far apart- it’s like a wormhole. Another had a giant underground shopping center bounded by 2 landmarks that are on seperate sides of town. After this, I had dreams of being in the shopping center: once buying CD’s in a record store and another time buying clothes in a clothing store- both times I was amazed at how inexpensive the merchandise was. In the last dream with this theme, I again attempted to enter and someone told me that the whole complex had gone out of business. Somehow I was allowed to enter and the place was abandoned except for a few stores that still remained and it looked like a 3rd world market.

    2) I hated “The Big Chill”! I kept saying to myself that people don’t act like that. The whole concept of them attending the funeral of a close friend who committed suicide and later throwing around a football at halftime of the Mich-Ohio St game was way too superficial. I also did not like “Independence Day”. Similarly, “Gone With the Wind” leaves me cold. The characters were shallow and the plot was boring- not to mention that it tended to cover up the real evils of slavery and glorified the culture that was based on it.

  69. All my life, I’ve been blessed/cursed with almost always remembering my dreams. I have the same recurring dreams that others do with losing teeth, making it to class on time, and bathrooms that are overflowing. The only recurring nightmares I have seem to be with Jaws. That’s just about the only horror movie that scarred me (and scared me). I seem to have many apocalyptic dreams about the end of the world and I’m usually fighting vampires in a losing battle. It’s usually more tiring than scary.

  70. 2. Grease

  71. I have the bridge dream too, only it is just my mom and grandpa in the car and we drive through a hole in the bridge, not drive off the bridge itself.
The water underneath is only a couple of feet deep, and my grandpa and I make it, but we never find my mom.
Falling in Elevators is very common too, I think.

  72. 1. When I wake up I usually don’t have any recollection of any dreams. Once every month or two I’ll wake up realizing I was dreaming, but 5 minutes later I don’t remember what it was about. So if any of my dreams reoccur then I don’t know about it.

    2. Meet the Parents (I’ll also agree with those that hate There’s something about Mary, Napoleon Dynamite, Grease, Taledaga Nights and Lost in Translation)

  73. Hyacinth – You are not alone. My love of musicals died a little when I saw Cats.

For movies I hated Titanic, but I actually called up a friend and asked why they hadn’t warned me about 2001:A Space Oddesy.

  74. 1. Oh, lots of recurring dreams! It can go anywhere from bad driving dreams (where the brakes don’t work) to not graduating in college because of a failed project or not enough credits (not true in real life). At first, these recurring dreams freaked me out, but now as time passes, I wake up annoyed.

I’ve been interpreting my dreams for years, ever since I became interested how one of my dreams revealed an outcome of a situation I somehow knew was going to happen. I’ve come to believe that the subconscious can be a good guide for certain dilemmas and revealing certain true feelings.

    2. Hmm, Dirty Dancing and Ghost (R.I.P. Patrick Swayze). And yes, Grease too. And Atonement; I didn’t think it was Oscar-worthy to begin with.

    3. Watch the shows I missed this week on Hulu, listen to new music (it makes me feel tons better), make plans for the near future.

    4. Er…nothing memorable. But I suppose that’s a good thing?

  75. I just cannot get through Lost in Translation. I’ve tried a few times and I just don’t like it.

  76. 1.None. I hardly ever remember my dreams.

    2. I absolutely hated Titanic. I was ready for Jack to drown long before he did.

    3. I’ll be at a town festival doing promotions for a charter school that I’m starting (anyone near Layafette, CO, come on over!).

    4. The last wedding I was in (as a groomsmaid), the bride was a professional jewelry designer. She made all the female attendants gorgeous beaded necklace/ earring sets.

  77. 1. I can’t even remember my dreams, but I don’t think I’ve ever had a recurring one. I’ll try to pay better attention….

    2. “Dumb and Dumber.” I also didn’t like “Casablanca,” but I saw it when I was pretty young, so maybe I should see it again before making up my mind.

    3. Nothing in particular – just running errands and relaxing. My best friend is getting married next month, so the next few weekends will be pretty busy!

    4. My husband had the best groomsmen gifts for his guys – he gave them all keychain-sized Leathermans (Leathermen?) with their initials engraved on them. Insanely useful!

  78. 1: I have these dreams where I can not open my eyes. Most of the time it’s not because they hurt or because I’m blind, I just can’t open them!! I also have one where I’m being chased by a pack of men (i’m a girl btw) in this weird city place. I have no idea what that means…………..
2: I must admit i did not care for the Godfather! (haha ant family guy addicts will recognize that one!!) but honestly I still don’t like Superbad because I didn’t find it that funny. I also don’t like Donnie Darko. It seems like everyone of my friends LOVE that movie, but I think it’s lame!
3: Hopefully this weekend I’m going to the Yankee Peddler Festival which is an arts and crafts festival in Ohio. It’s supposed to rain so cross your fingers!!
4: I’ve only been a bridesmaid once and we all got very pretty necklaces as a gift.

    ReCaptcha: Auerback embarks

  79. Dream: I’ve had all those weird, strange sort of scary dreams and the recurring one is that I fly – amazing! And I do it well – and always wake so happy and just a little disappointed that it was a dream. :)

Weekend: daughter who lives somewhere else is coming through on her way somewhere else. Son-in-law is going to cook dinner. Looking forward to the visit.

  80. 1. I don’t have recurring dreams anymore as much as recurring places. There is a theme park I know backwards and forwards; its so weird. Oh, and I feel you on the restaurant dreams…we always called them “weeds” dreams. In mine I was always running the whole restaurant and couldn’t even get drinks out to my tables. It happened when I was a lifeguard, too. Except worse, because I was alwas too worn out to save the drowning kid. Both of these would lead me to wake up exhausted.
    2. Gladiator and the Cruel Intentions remake with Reese Witherspoon. I left the theater. The Notebook, too, of course I saw it 2 months after leaving a bad marriage, so I was a bit cynical.
    3. Vegas, baby! Whoo Hoo!
    4. I was only a bridesmaid twice, and both time just got horrific dresses. cliche, I know.

  81. I’ve had two recurring dreams regularly as an adult. In one I’m wandering around one of those big mysterious houses that always has hidden stairways and unusual rooms; in the dream I know it’s my grandfather’s house – though it looks nothing like it. It’s sort of an adventure and also frustrating, I’m looking for something (don’t know what) that I never find.

The other always takes place in the cafeteria at my Jr High. I’m sitting at the table where my clique always sat, with a strange assortment of people: my best friend from kindergarten (still 5 yrs old), someone I’ve met recently, a friend from high school (still a teenager). Even people I still know and see regularly appear at random ages. We’re all just hangng out, having lunch, like we belong there together. Nothing happens, we just sit there, plucked from the time-space continuum, like that’s where we belong.

  82. 1. i have had most of the recurring dreams stated here so i’ll name two that haven’t been mentioned: the first, i’m running from danger but i run like a gazelle. great, long strides that make me feel like i’m soaring. people around me gaze in wonder at the flying girl and i feel beautiful and free. maybe i was a gazelle in a past life?

the second is an apocalyptic city in the throes of an alien attack. i stand in the one building not being destroyed by the invaders and i watch it all unfold like an epic movie. it’s not scary. it’s very very cool.

    2. “silence of the lambs”. that’s right, i didn’t like “silence of the lambs”.

    3. harvest festival!!

    4. my man and i are getting married next year and i am totally stealing the baseball tickets idea. so, thank you for that!

  83. 1. I always seem to have dreams that my teeth are (not falling out) crumbling. I’d feel my tooth, and it would break into tiny pieces in my hand. Also, I heard somewhere that you can’t die in yours dreams, but I have. I had a dream that a guy shot me in the head, and everything went black. Then I woke up (in the dream) in my neighbor’s living room. I think I apologized for bleeding on the floor. Then the guy shot me again, and I died. I kind of liked it, because it was very vivid and interesting.
    2. High School Musical, Camp Rock, etc. They all stink.
    3. Sniffling myself to death
    4. I’ve only been a bridesmaid once, and I got a camera that printed the pictures as stickers. Pretty cool. (I was 10 at the time)

  84. I just thought of another dream I had. I had a dream that my youth group at church was planning a talent show, so I went. My best friend went up and did this fantastic, complicated dance number, and I was supposed to do the same thing! This was the first I’d ever heard about it. I was up next, and had no idea how to dance. It was terrifying.

  85. 1.I always have this dream where tiny elf men are sticking cotton wool down my throat&I’m choking but I can’t stop it.A lot of the time when I wake up I’m choking on my own spit(which is really gross).
2.Worst movie: that would have to be Hancock, just thought it was such a stupid movie.
    3. Was a bridesmaid for my cousin and got this really cool chain, but in a colour I would never wear.sad.

  86. 1. I can’t remember any recurring dreams I’ve had recently, and all the ones I can remember from when I was younger are pretty typical stuff, like flying and being chased.

    2. I have several of these. A couple that have already been mentioned are The Sixth Sense (the twist wasn’t exciting to me) and Top Gun (I can’t stand Tom Cruise’s character!). What’s funny is that the ones I really dislike seem to be those that my friend(s) have loved. I guess I’m just kind of perverse and HAVE to hate a movie after I’ve been told “You’re going to love this!”

    3. My husband and I are going to a bonfire party tonight. The weather is really nice, so it should be a lot of fun.

    4. I’ve only been a bridesmaid once, a few months ago, and we all got whimsical necklaces that matched our (different colored) dresses. I haven’t worn mine again, but it’s very pretty.

  87. 1. For a long time all my dreams ended the same way. I’d be in the middle of some embarrassing moment and then it would stop frame and become one of those pictures of a person holding a book with a picture on the cover of them holding a book with a picture of them holding a book… Or like when you put 2 mirrors in from of another and the image just keeps repeating. It was very annoying. I’d wake up ever time.

    2. Citizen Kane, I could not, for the life of me, sit through it. I put Seven Pounds on my netflix queue and it sat around for a while. It just never drew me in.

    3. I had a fondue party this weekend for 10 people. The best part of fondue is you don’t have to worry about cooking. No that’s wrong the best part is chocolate fondue.

    4. I got a silver jewelry set at my sisters wedding which I wore today, so I think it’s a good gift.

  88. 1) Wow so many people have had the same recurring dreams as I have! Also, apparently, I remember my dreams more than a lot of my friends…
-In high school – don’t remember my locker combo, haven’t gone to classes, don’t have my schedule, suddenly it’s a test day (this seriously NEVER happened to me in high school/college)
-I am naked or using the bathroom in front of the whole school or in front of a lot of people (Really I haven’t been in high school for 9 years)
-I am at the grocery store I worked at in high school (boring dream but I think about why on earth am I still working here for $5.15 an hour when I have a real job now?)

2)Lost in Translation & Wag the Dog (otherwise I pretty much love every movie for what its purpose is… romantic, cheesy, parody, etc)

    4) I actually have loved ALL of my gifts I’ve had as a bridesmaid… as a child I received totally awesome barbies; from both my sister and my friend’s wedding I received items personal to me: jewelry I enjoy, PEZ dispensers (which I collect), etc… I actually feel kind of crappy about what I gave out – jewelry my mom made & a gift card (kind of lame!)

  89. Ahh what a great time waster while i sit in the computer lab here at school while no one comes in for any help.

    1) I get those dreams that something’s chasing me but I can’t gain any speed while running…which scares the crap out of me because I’m a sprinter.

    2) I HATED Transformers 2. I have officially sworn off Michael Bay movies. It pissed me off even more when I wasted 2 1/2 hours on that movie when I could have been watching Harry Potter or Public Enemies. (Is Public Enemies any good by the way? Never got to see it)

When I tried to explain to a group of people why Transformers 2 sucked and that I want my super hero movies like Iron Man or The Dark Night, I got chastised!

Needless to say, anyone I talk to who’s in my major (computer graphics) and is into video games and super hero movies and stuff agree with me…so to hell with the ignorant ones who like to watch 2 1/2 hour product placement ads.

recaptcha: andrea Hobart. Sounds like a good name for a novel’s main character.

  90. 1. When I was a teenager, I used to have the same dream every year just before school started: it was the first day, but I couldn’t find my room, didn’t have my books, the building was different than I remembered, etc.

The funny thing is, I had one of those dreams a few months ago, and I’m 30! In the dream, I was starting my senior year, and the building had completely changed so I couldn’t find anything.

I also have those dreams before major events. Two nights before the wedding, I dreamed I was at the rehearsal and no one from the groom’s side had shown up.

For the past several months, I’ve been arranging and planning a professional conference hosted by the organization I work at – which happened just this past Thursday & Friday. A few days before I had a dream that we were at the conference, but for some reason it was being held in the living room of my parents’ old house. Plus several of the speakers were late and I forgot to pass out the handouts. Luckily, the real-life conference went on without a hitch.

  91. Forgot to add this one:

    2. “The Lion King.” I remember seeing the trailer when I was in high school and not being particularly impressed. I had a friend who was obsessed with the movie, and she convinced me to watch the tape with her. When she later asked what I thought I admitted that I didn’t like the movie, and she exclaimed “Then I don’t like you!” She was only half-kidding – it didn’t end our friendship, but she actually seemed upset that I didn’t like it.

  92. 2. I never cared for There Will Be Blood, especially since No Country for Old Men had more blood (and was a better movie) than There Will Be Blood

    3. No bad bridesmaid gifts that come to mind. My suggestion for those ugly bridesmaid dresses is to donate them to a place that provides prom dresses to underprivliged kids. We have a teacher at our high school that collects dress and tux rental donations for this purpose. I think she alters the dresses for the girls. When I gave her my dresses, I told her to feel free to alter, change, glam-ify them however the students wanted to.

  93. #2 Blade runner. I’d never seen it until this weekend- I upset my other half (and many of his friends) by hating the film that seems to be in everyone’s top 10 films. Was completely bored all of the way thru- it didn’t help that this is the first film I’ve watched in HD- It looked so fake to me, not “real” like everyone else seems to think it does!

  94. 1. I have 3 recurring dreams, my favorite one is can breathe underwater 2. I watch a commercial airplane crash and go up in flames and 3. I am a kid and am forced to use a really gross public restroom.

    2. anything Pixar

    3. We watched football all weekend. exciting.

    4. I luckily have not been in very many weddings… don’t have a best or worst..

  95. 1. Most of the dreams I remember are either flying dreams, where I have the ability to float, or dreams where my teeth are either falling out or being pulled out.

    2. I’m sure I won’t make any friends by saying Star Wars – the original trilogy and not the modern chapters (lots of people don’t like those). Also the Lord of the Rings does nothing for me.

    4. My friend and her groom were planning and paying for everything themselves, so I knew they didn’t have a lot to spare. I was her MOH and I told her her repeatedly that I do not want her to get me anything at all, it was a pleasure just being part of her day. Well, she gave me a bag full of dollar store items, which was very sweet of her, and the gesture very much appreciated, but most of it went unused and eventually in the garbage.

  96. 1) I have a lot of dreams about work; specifically about interactions with my customers. Way too often I dream about my daily life and activities. It puzzles me.

    2) I loath “Benjamin Button”. I saw it in a theater that serves beer. Even after a couple of pints, my desire to leave remained.

    3) ACL!!! (Austin City Limits). 3 day concert series, with something around 80 +/- bands. Pearl Jam will be closing it up!

    4) I’ve been in a couple of weddings. I have to say, the gifts have been nice. The only bad remains are the thought of what to do with all of the dresses. Will I actually wear ANY of them again? (I think the movie “27 dresses” is based off of me!)

  97. 1. I have this recurring dream where I either go to work forgetting my pants or I suddenly strip in the middle of a meeting and I just hope nobody notices.

  98. I dream that I am walking in a national park and a snowman comes and throws me in quicksand.
    I don’t like snowmen.

The Last Song, Wall-E, It’s a Wonderful Life
