But what does it do for prostate cancer?

26868~Housework-Won-t-Kill-You-Posters.jpgJudging by the state of my house right now, I need a mammogram.

Women who keep their homes clean and tidy are less likely to develop breast cancer than those who let the dust and dishes pile up, according to a new report.

Researchers found regular moderate exercise such as housework provides greater protection from the disease than more strenuous but less frequent sporting activity.

Being active in the home cut the likelihood of pre-menopausal women developing breast cancer by 29 per cent compared with being inactive, and reduced the risk for post-menopausal women by 19 per cent.

And no, the research team wasn’t entirely male.

  1. Just what I need…one more risk factor! My mom is one of six girls in her family, and the only one to have had BC (she’s fine now). I’ve also never given birth, which puts me higher on the risk list. Last year our local newscast reported a study that found (for some reason) that of all the cities in my state, the one that I live in had a higher incidence of BC in women over age (mumble mumble). Oy.

  2. To see this as a cause and effect relationship seems like faulty reasoning. It makes more sense to say that the kind of woman who keeps her house clean is also the kind of woman (i.e. responsible and health-motivated) who takes care of herself in other ways. Unless they had some way to control other activity factors (like taking the dog for a walk every day), I’m not sure it’s the housework keeping these women healthy.

  3. They could’ve also said “Researchers found regular moderate exercise such as walking/insert-any-other-moderate-exercise-here provides greater protection from the disease than more strenuous but less frequent sporting activity.” Why they felt the need to throw housework specifically in there, I could not say. Unless it’s some type of “hint.”
