Braies aren't that inconvenient. I'm a reenactor so yes, I've worn them. They don't actually tie 'around the shins', the long 13th-14th century ones reach down to the knees but they're just folded and tucked into hose which were separate and tied up to the same belt or cord that held the braies up. You can drop the braies and hose in one lot just like trousers but they're a bit more fiddly to pull back up.

@melly: There was a point in the late 14th / early 15th century where the hemlines of men's doublets did come above the crotch before joined hose were invented. They had undies though so it wasn't necessarily all hanging out for the world to see.

I once asked my mom to buy me some "tighty whities" and she came back telling me they'd never heard of Tighty Whities, thinking it was a brand name.

Now, the fact she didn't know that tighty whities are a euphemism for briefs is funny, but it was much funnier to me to picture my mom asking a clerk for Tighty Whities.

I usually where boxers, but briefs are better for sports and workouts.

This is funny. Just recently, my husband (baby boomer age) went to buy new underwear. We had to go to several stores before we could find the jockey briefs that he prefers. I have the theory that baby boomers are the ones that like briefs--younger (and older)men prefer boxers. At least the merchandise in the stores indicated this.

I just read a list on ty.rannosaur.us (linked to it in my name) about vain historical figures. That one mentioned the Henry the VIII/cod peice connection too, but said prior to the invention of the cod peice the nobility had let their junk swing free. Like COMPLETELY free, out in the open, and that there were even prothetics to make a little man look bigger. Can you flossers verify this? I think this was around the same time women's fashions had the breasts completely exposed. I have a memory of seeing portraits in some museam when I was 7 or 8 of women in gorgeous gowns with necklines BELOW the breasts.
