Balloons can cause many animals to eat them and die. And yeah, it's pollution! It's one of those things that we should just move on from.

I remember finding a "time capsule" in a friends back yard as a kid. He wanted throw everything away I insisted on keeping it all. I hcecked itout it had an old dime form 1927 and the full name and DOB of the kid who put it in there to begin with. I hunted down the person and he was shocked. He didnt think that would happen but it was a blast, he was about 75 opr so when I met him, he said he wrote the note and burried the capsule when he was 8. I never talked to him after that but we spent 2 hours talking about when he was a kid in comparison to when I was. Very enlightening experience, gave me an appreciation for all things oldschool

My grandparents found a balloon on their farm when I was growing up from a little girl. I was visiting, and I wrote her. She wasn't too far away from me, but we corresponded for a few letters as 9 year olds until we found other things to do! I still have her picture!

One day, a few years ago, I found a balloon in the front yard. It was a school project, launched from an elementary school about 20 miles away. It had a boy's name, and phone number to call him to tell him the balloon was found. I don't hear well on the phone so my mother made the call. She said the boy's mother found it interesting but the kid, himself, didn't seem to give a damn. haha

Ha - didn't notice until Steve mentioned it - but I had that song playing in my head through reading the whole article. Thanks a lot guys.

Very interesting stories though - the Laura Buxton one is almost twilight zone freaky.

Coincindences abound. One of my local (KY) public radio stations happens to be broadcasting that particular episode of RadioLab right now. And, yeah, one of the girls was really nine. "Almost ten", to quote her. I would encourage everyone to go poke around in the RadioLab archives, it's a gold mine. rb
