The Seahawks were very close to moving to L.A. in 1995. I believe then owner Ken Behring actually had moving vans lined up. The NFL ultimately blocked the move and the Seahawks stayed put. Right where they belong, in Seattle

After Washington lost the Senators for the second time ( first to Minnesota, second to Texas) The San Diego Padres were going to move to Washington. Topps even printed baseball cards that said Washington but had the players in San Diego Uniforms.

I can concur that Mayflower got a raw deal in it all. I watched the 30 for 30 special and Barry Levinson did it right, however, I am one in Baltimore that thinks that Mayflower got shafted. It was not their fault that the Colts moved. They were doing their job. It sucks that they took the brunt of a lot of rage, but it happens.

As far as the story told by Levinson, it was great and very well done. I think, however, he glossed over the fact that the Baltimore Colts and the ownership in the late 70's and early 80's were getting lambasted by the local media because of their poor play and what seemed like apathy to get the Colts up to par with the rest of the league.

That said, the story about the Baltimore Colts Marching Band is great very touching. And it even has a nice ending. Levinson really highlighted the right areas and got some great old footage (especially the footage of a drunk Bob Irsay having a press conference refuting the potential move to Indy).

I do know that many people in Baltimore (including some of my friends and family) feel very strongly about the Colts, how the whole situation evolved, and the people involved (hatred of Irsay and Tagliabue in particular). I'm sure many tears were shed after watching this doc.

The Minnesota Twins almost moved to North Carolina in 1997 and they would have been known as the Triplets, as the move would be to the Piedmont Triad of Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point, as the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St Paul do now.

There was also a rumored move to Florida, I think they were in the running for St Pete along w/ the White Sox, although perhaps not at the same time.

And the Vikings are rumored to be a top option for LA, as a new stadium in MN is not even close to approval (we just opened one for the U of M and the Twins new park opens next yr).

Also, the AFL was going to add a football team in MN, but the threat of losing this market prompted the NFL to approve the expansion Vikings in 1960 (the team started play in 61)

Add in the Laker and North Star moves, as well as the Twins being the former Washington Senators and we've had moves or near moves in all 4 major sports.

ReCaptcha: GNP grouches (which is usually what causes a team move)

How about the Timberwolves to New Orleans in 1994. The City was all pumped up. There were news reports DAILY talking about how it was a "done deal".

That was the last time anyone in Baltimore hired a Mayflower moving van - making them another franchise that folded.
