I remember hearing about something Bill Cowher did early in his coaching career of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was at a social event around the time the Steeler’s made it to the AFC championship in 1994. He was approached by an older woman who began telling him how much she appreciated all he did with the Steelers. He thanked her and carried on a lovely conversation with her for about five minutes or so before he asked for her name. It was Sophie Masloff, the Mayor of Pittsburgh.

Troy H. needs to read a little closer next time. Specifically, this sentence:

The bold part under the picture says:

“Manginiâ€™s next move fell right in line with all the control-freak, single-minded, my-way-or-the-highway football coaches of legend. He didnâ€™t tell payroll to subtract $3 from the playerâ€™s next check. He levied a $1,701 fineâ€”the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.”

The bolded section says nothing about WHY he fined the player, nor does any other part of the story. The entire first part of the story doesn’t make any sense if you don’t know that the player took the bottle without paying.

Another Woody Hayes anecdote — when he went to Michigan to recruit high school football players, he would always fill up a gas can or two before he left Ohio and carry them in his car. The reason? Because if he bought gasoline in Michigan, he would pay a state tax, part of which would fund the University of Michigan!
