the world cup refs were so bad and not using replay tech is insane. who knows if the correct team won.

Hey…I live in a city with a major league team. I want to be an umpire. I spent my childhood being picked on, I should be able to take on those overpaid little boys who play baseball!

Interesting article on something I’ve wondered about for a while. There is a middle school principal here in Western North Carolina who is a pilot and flies himself around the country to ref college football games.

The inequity for WNBA officials should not slide by without concern. One can make any number of arguments about what the market will bear, but that gap is wider than a market gap. It’s a statement of the league’s (and the NBA, which has a stake in the WNBA, for that matter) assessment of the value of their product. And the disparity is clearly gender-based, regardless of the gender of the officials themselves. The gender of the sport is partly the cause of the discriminatory salary.

Coleman Dairy is a big name here in Arkansas. Speaking of refs though, this seems to come at an interesting time since two were just suspended for making bad calls during the Arkansas vs. Florida football game last weekend.

I’m sorry, Bill, but I’ll be the first to say that this season’s baseball run up to the playoffs. And the playoffs themselves were obviously rigged. I have never seen so many bad calls against the Dodgers in my life! I don’t know the reasons why but in one game alone I saw about eight bad calls against the Dodgers and none against the Cardinals. There was also the game in AZ where their pitcher (I think it was Schwerzer) hit a Dodgers batter (I’m pretty sure it was Manny) and they both got warnings for it when the Dodgers batter did ABSOLUTELY nothing to deserve it. I admit the Dodgers could have and should have had better pitching and offense against the Phillies but all of the bad calls against them didn’t help any.

Yeah, everybody’s on the umpire or referee when he blows the occasional call, and I suppose it’s been that way since the first close call in the first game played. But when you look at it over the long haul, the zebras and the guys in blue generally get it right, and they get it right in real time. How about giving them credit for that, eh?
