I don't know whether to laugh or scream at people like Karen... clearly they have all the knowledge and discernment into conspiracies and unexplained phenomena.

I strongly prefer libertarian solutions to problems and parents being allowed to make their own choices in how they take care of their kids... but we're reaching a point where this anti-vaccination garbage is threatening my safety and my kids' safety.

I wish the people spreading this nonsense would get a better understanding about life pre-WWII with the threats of epidemics and untreatable maladies that were so pervasive and caused so much suffering. This hysteria has the potential to send us back to a time where quality of life was judged on a much lower range than it is now.

Marion, I don't mind opening up a can of worms. The more discussion, the better! But I go a little gushy inside anytime someone mentions planning for Italy and getting Holland.

poor Miss C! you opened up the worm can!

What I don't understand is why people eat tuna. It's loaded with mercury, and it's really, really stinky.

You know, when my daughter was born without any internal ear structures, (she's hollow!) I asked the doctor: "Was it my ancient eggs?" "No." "Was it all the acid I dropped in the 80s?". Veeery long pause and shocked stare: "Ummmm, No."

Sometimes, sh*t just happens. It would be nice to have someone or something to blame... vaccines seem to be the scapegoat of the decade... but sometimes, hey, Will of God. You planned for Italy, you got Holland. Well, quit pointing fingers, knuckle down, and learn to speak Dutch. And stop trying to control air traffic when you don't know anything about how to fly a plane. Leave it to the experts.

I was never vaccinated for anything until I made plans to leave the country. Vaccines contain mercury. Who in their right mind would inject mercury into a baby's bloodstream without so much as doing a little research? That's crazy to me. Read personal stories at thinktwice.com about parents who have lost their kids to vaccines.
The HPV vaccine is one of the worst. More women are dying from the vaccine than from HPV caused cancer. So, why are they vaccinating those young girls?

What has people troubled is:
1) scientific research was obtained from only one side of the issue (pro-vaccination)
2) the collectivist, pro-mandate, anti-individual liberty posture expressed by Wallace throughout the story.

Wallace's matter is just the same ol' rehash: those who educate themselves on the vaccination issue and weigh the perceived benefits with the possible risks, and then form the conclusion that their kids are better off without the vaccine, are rejecting the “experts” the power they warrant. They are unreasonable imbeciles feeding off web searches, deluding themselves and denying “hard-won knowledge” since adhering to the “pseudo-science” of opposing mandatory vaccinations is their comfort tool to fill the empty voids in their empty lives. Wallace just can't overcome the fact that anyone should actually see the powerful forces at work within the Medical-Congressional-Pharmaceutical complex, and deny them authority over their lives and the lives of their kids. The vaccination business is all sound —- 100% of it -— and if you think differently, you are a fool and an pariah.

The piece is like every one I read in that it collates the number of people that die directly from the vaccination to those who actually die from a disease that supposedly would have been prevented by the vaccine. Of course, this makes the vaccination look like a much better risk. But, there is never any remark of those who do not die, but instead suffer from all the different diseases and disorders that ruin their quality of life –- whether it’s autism or the many and diverse (and unexplained) neurological and autoimmune disorders that pervade modern life.

Thank you for the article on vaccination, it's awesome. Amanda - the article explains that vaccination works on a community level - p. 6: "...Why? Because vaccines don’t always take. What does that mean? You can’t minimize your individual risk unless your herd, your friends and neighbors, also buy in."

I've gotten my children fully vaccinated, I've even had the littlest one get extra shots because she's had cochlear implant surgery and is now considered compromised (extra hole in head). Next week, when the H1N1 vaccine becomes available, I'm getting the family up early to be first in line. Imprinted in my brain is the plague episode of Little House on the Prairie... I don't ever want to hold a grey, cold, dead child in my arms.

On a blackly comic note: I've seen a poster of Jenny McCarthy with the following caption: "Every time a child dies, I grow stronger!".

I have never understood why parents care about whether other kids are vaccinated or not. If you are for vaccinations, and your kids are up to date on their shots, why do you care if other kids aren't? Aren't they confident the vaccine works on their kid and therefore their kid is "safe"?

My kids are selectively vaccinated. There's plenty of unbiased info on all the vaccines as well as the diseases they prevent and I choose from there. None of it has anything to do with the whole autism/vaccine debate or anything like that. I am just not comfortable giving my kids 12 different vaccines (the recommended amount) BEFORE 3 MONTHS OF AGE.
