I grew up in LA on the same block as a McDonald's and they used to give out lots of cool stuff for trick-or-treaters; i. e. ice cream cones, gift certificates, Happy Meals w/ the cute Halloween McNugget people (I loved those!), etc. My friends and I always got our parents to buy us two costumes a piece and we would also trade amongst ourselves so we could go back over and over again! Good times!! I was disappointed when we moved to Phoenix and I found out that not only were the McDonald's here stingy the closest one was like five miles away (at the time)! As a side note, my little brother and I ate a LOT of Mickey D's growing up-seeing as it was on the same block as our house!-and while we both went through chubby phases, neither of us is obese. It makes me mad when people blame the food... yeah, it'll make you fat but only if that's all you eat 24/7! But I digress... great post! I've been posting all of the Halloween stuff on my Facebook wall for my friends to enjoy and I seem to have created new mental_floss fans-yay!!

Gina, I grew up on a farm in Manitoba, Canada and there was only one place where we had to "perform". Our neighbours would ask us to sing a song for a treat but it was all worth it because they gave out full-size chocolate bars. Sweet!

In St. Louis, trick or treaters are expected to tell a joke or a similar "trick" before they receive their candy. I never realized this was unusual until I moved away. Is this an expected part of the process anywhere else?
