Artists think they’re so clever

Actually, Untitled isn’t really hanging in a gallery; it’s a digital mock-up by David from the Ironic Sans blog. He writes, “If I had the time, the means, and the resources, I’d make a series of large paintings of those little cards that describe paintings in museums. They would be paintings of the cards that describe themselves.” We think this image is just as good, and we didn’t have to pony up no “suggested donation” to see it. Kudos!

  1. Incredibly lame idea. I think I thought of it once in Junior High.

  2. This is one of those things where you aren’t really sure whether it’s a parody of modern art or modern art itself.

  3. in response to heather: isn’t that sort of the point? i mean, postmodern art (forgive me for using that term) is all about the meta statement being made and not really about the art itself. post modern (or is it post-post modern? i don’t know) art can’t even be parodied because it is a parody in and of itself.

sadly, i can see myself being one of the people who goes to see an exhibit like that….

  4. God, art is so uber-lame.
I’m gonna go and dribble ink all over my butt and smear it on something of societal significance. Then you’ll be writing blog entries about me, Mr. Ransom.

  5. A few years back, an ad agency (Chiat Day) had a similar concept to promote a museum.

And for some reason I can’t insert a link.

google: Chiat Day museum billboard to read an article in LA Weekely - The Ad Campaign That Would Not Die, 2001
