Debbie – The Gram Parsons situation was definitely in my research, but his situation was a little bit different.

After Parsons died, his step-father wanted the body flown back home to be buried. His friends, though, stole the body, not for money, but because they claimed he wanted to be cremated at Joshua Tree National Monument. So they took him, had one last party, and burned his body. They were eventually caught for their deed, but stealing a body itself was not illegal at the time, so they were only charged with stealing a coffin. They paid a $750 fine and that was that.
