For approximately a year back in middle school, I was obsessed with early 20th century baseball generally, and the 1919 Black Sox scandal, specifically. I shoveled snow to earn enough money to buy a vintage St. Louis Browns hat. I inexplicably altered my wiffle ball stance to mirror Mel Ott’s. I mowed lawns to buy relatively obscure books, like Shoeless Joe and Ragtime Baseball. It was a brief, but intensely passionate interest.
