A SIX-STEP SOLUTION:

GREEN > GREET > GREAT > GROAT > GROAN > GROWN > BROWN

Did you come up with a different series of words? Please post them in the comments. Thanks!

  1. Was able to do it in five:
    GREEN
    GREET
    GREAT
    GROAT definition of ‘groat’
    GROAN
    GROWN
    BROWN

    -”BB”-

  2. My error. They were counting “grown” to “brown” as step six; I was only counting the five steps in between.

    But it still beats seven!!

    -”BB”-

  3. GREEN
    GREED
    BREED
    BLEED
    BLEND
    BLOND
    BLOWN
    BROWN

  4. whoops that’s wrong!

  5. green
    greet
    great
    groat
    groan
    grown
    brown

    Oh it’s the same as BB’s :)

  6. Green
    Greed
    Breed
    Bread
    Broad
    Brood
    Broon
    Brown

Definitions of Broon: 1) The colour brown; Of the colour brown 2)Newcastle Brown Ale, a well known brand of brown ale beer.

  7. Brown
    Grown
    Grewn
    Green

“Grewn” is the English pronunciation of the German word for green. (Hey, if Valerie gets to have Broon, I get to have Grewn.)

  8. Here’s the first solution I came up with:

    GREEN
    GREED
    CREED
    CREW’D
    CROWD
    CROWN
    BROWN

I didn’t know if that would fly, but around here, apparently, anything goes… *wink*
