I had no idea that kermit the frog was part of sesame street. how in the heck did jim henson get the rights for him and open up a new show called the muppets?

@lin: Jim Henson owned the rights for the Muppets because he was the creator of the Muppets.

I’m about as old as the show so I was the demographic. :) Roosevelt Franklin did have his own themesong, yes — “my name is Roosevelt Franklin, yeah yeah yeah…” And I remember Don Music — “drive, drive, drive your car, gently down the street…” I can still do my “Herbuhht Buhhhhrdsfoot” imitation. I don’t remember the human comedy people though (though do remember Alan Arkin singing on Captain Kangaroo once), and like many was very sad when Mr. Hooper died. “Thanks, Mister Pooper!” “…Hooper, Big Bird, Hooper.”

Does anyone remember Kingston Livingston the Third? And his song “Just happy to be me”? I loved him growing up!

Glad another reader remembered S.A.M. the robot. I was so intrigued by him at age 3 or 4. I’ve never gotten tired of watching SS. My boys are 12 and 9 and they like to watch it when they have a day off school. The 9 year-old says, “people at school say it’s a baby show, but they just don’t get it.”

Did anyone else stay up late or TiVo the old episodes when Noggin was showing them a few years back? That was heaven!

My favorite little-seen character is Slimey, the orange-striped worm who was Oscar's friend. I remember an episode where John Candy, dressed in lederhosen, and Slimey played a clarinet duet.
