The oddest bit of medical knowledge I know of was the “Dancing mania” of the Dark Ages. During the Black Plague in France (12th century), their was a very popular bread similar to sourdough. The only problem was that, when said bread molded, it was near invisible. A byproduct of the mold and bacteria was “lysergic acid”, better known as LSD. So, huge parts of these dying French towns were taking to the streets and dancing while high on acid.

A friend of mine came back from China a number of years ago having suffered a heart attack. Among the medicines prescribed him were these gigantic, irregularly-shaped, seemingly chocolate-covered pills.
I translated some of the characters and indeed, he had been given chocolate-covered hairballs to cure his angina.
