I remember seeing something about this! One village sent their best men to the US to look for Jon.

What a set of photos! I am not much for tropical weather,
but if I were to visit a South Pacific/Oceania locale, I would be
sure to make it Vanuatu.

As you know, neither pictures nor words alone can do a true justice in expressing the nature of life in Vanuatu. This has been one of the most challenging things when trying to relate my experience living there for two years as a volunteer. Your photos and descriptions are genuine and capture a vibrant people and culture that I still have difficulty explaining to friends and family. Thank you for sharing your insights and experiences. When I see your photos I am instantly connected back to it all, and of course the highlight of those memories is always centered on the kids...they are amazing!

@ Bobby Jean --

I've never heard of that wreck, sorry! There are many, many downed planes around there. If you're really interested in finding it, though, get in touch with Allan Power Dive Center in Luganville. They've been wreck diving those waters for 30 years. If anyone would know, it's them.

How extraordinary! My uncle served there during World War II and likely marveled at the same lush forests, clean water and remarkably friendly people. I have to ask, though, if during your explorations you heard of the PB4Y-1 (B-24) that sits on the ocean floor about a half mile from Espiritu Santo? It is my uncle's plane. The crew is listed as POW/MIA.

When I was in the Army stationed in Germany in the early 90's I took a trip up to Amsterdam with some friends. I remember an older Dutch couple who ran a shop who, once they found out we were American soldiers, wouldn't let us pay for anything. They showed us their scrapbook from the liberation in WWII and were as appreciative as if it had just happened. It made me proud to be an American soldier.
