The All-Time Best-Selling Video Games
by Jason English - February 15, 2007 - 3:18 PM

smb3.jpg In the past, we’ve discussed the best-selling albums and top rated TV shows. Today the topic is the most successful video games.

1. Super Mario Bros. 3 (Nintendo Entertainment System – 18 million)

2. Super Mario Land (Game Boy – 14 million)

3. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PlayStation 2 — 13 million)

4. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PlayStation 2 — 12 million)

5. Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64 — 11 million)

6. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (PlayStation 2 — 11 million)

7. Grand Theft Auto III (PlayStation 2 — 11 million)

8. Gran Turismo (PlayStation — 10.5 million)

9. Super Mario Bros. 2 (Nintendo Entertainment System — 10 million)

10. Gran Turismo 2 (PlayStation — 9.34 million)

Now this list doesn’t take into account “bundled games.” Like Super Mario Brothers, which came with Nintendo. Or Tetris, which was a Game Boy staple. Thanks to Answers.com.

  1. Super Mario Land seemed like a big surprise until I remembered that the Game Boy in all of its incarnations is the top selling console of all time.

  2. For whatever reason, my parents never realized that paying $200 for an Atari 2600 and another $200 for a few cartridges would have saved them the $20,000 I probably borrowed from them in my youth to play video games at arcades a quarter at a time.

  3. This is not a reliable list, it seems to be console only, because the sims (expansions included) sild all together over 70 million copies, world of warcraft and expansion more than 10 million, and starcraft 9.5 million.
