I think one of the reasons that I love the StoryCorps podcast so much is that it constantly reaffirms my faith in people. Last week, I was going through my iPod, just trying to catch up on pieces I missed, when I heard this story of Judge Olly Neal. The tale about the young Judge who accidentally developed a reading habit while cutting classes, is so unbelievably funny and warm. It reminded me of all the wonderful teachers I’ve had over the years, and of all of the things they do for you without your noticing. My explanation isn’t doing the story justice. You simply have to hear it.
The other story that got me was this one. It’s the most touching, and sad, and lovely story I’ve eve heard, told by a man who lost both his sons in 9/11. It’s just incredible.
In any case, it’s StoryCorps’ mission to collect oral histories and conversations between loved ones, and compile them in the Library of Congress. This Friday they’re running a National Day of Listening. If you’re looking for something to make this Thanksgiving really special, why not pull out a tape recorder, a cell phone (they have an app for this!), or other recording devices, and capture your family and friend’s memories while you’ve got them close. I know my wife and I will be participating, just to get our parent’s stories, and their laughter, on tape.

I heard the story from the man who lost his sons in 9/11 on the anniversary this year. I was bawling in my car on the way to work.
