Angelo Pericolo of New Jersey threw away what he thought was merely an empty disposable cup before his wife informed him the cup was holding her wedding ring. Unfortunately, the trash truck had already come and gone by this point, leaving the ring in a pile of almost 10 tons of garbage.

Amazingly, the sanitation workers helped Pericolo search through the piles of trash to find his wife’s ring. After about 45 minutes of digging through knee-deep trash, one of the workers discovered the ring. Apparently, it helped that the couple had tied their bags shut, because it slimmed down the number of possible bags to search through.

“I think it was a miracle,” said Bridget Pericolo.

  1. All praise and hail to the sanitation workers! What a wonderful thing for them to do — not only to let Pericolo dig through the garbage, but moreso to help him. Is it possible to get their names and publish them in the story? They deserve to have all the praise due to them.

  2. Does this mean that most people don’t tie their bags together?? Eeew.

And I agree with Rachel…what a wonderful thing for these guys to have done!!

  3. I hope they got a nice reward for saving Mr. Pericolo’s derriere!

  4. and, in the normally ironic state of things, pericolo means “danger” in italian.

  5. Haha Kate’s comment! Who doesn’t tie their garbage bags up? I thought it was one of those unwritten laws…like putting on another roll of toilet paper. No one talks about it, it just gets done when it’s supposed to.

  6. Yeah im surprised that most people don’t tie their bags. Sometimes my dad is so lazy that he just dumps it into the big bins if it’s too full and he can’t tie it. I give him a weird look every time. I usually separate the trash if it’s that bad.

But on a lighter and less smelly note, these Garbage Men are truly wonderful. How sweet of them to help! Holiday spirit!

  7. Ditto Kate and Kels, I always tie. If nothing else I’d rather not have eau du garbage wafting up as I carry the bag down.
