Or you can come to St. Louis for a newer, albeit colder, Mardi Gras. I’ve heard it’s the 2nd largest Mardi Gras in the U.S., although that may just be PR. It’s certainly a good time!

The only time I’ve been to Louisiana was for Mardi Gras in Lafayette, in 1994. What a wonderful time!

Mobile is a fun time. very different than NOLA.

Go to lafeyette or mamau to see the very odd “cajun french’ mardi gras. This entail farmers going to the affluent members of the town begging for food by putting on skits. they then take all the food and make a big bowl of gumbo and share it with the town.

A great tradition, but a bit odd to the initiate

some things you may not know;
the krewes pay to parade. There is no “mardi gras orgamnization”. It is a completely private affair paisd for by the parade members.
Also, nearly every parade krewe if also a charitable organization. many, like thoth, give 100′s of thousands annually in anonymous gifting.
Also- the crime rate during mardi gras is actuall LESS than the rest of the year, despite the extra 1million poepl and the booze on the street

This yearâ€™s Carnival season started on Jan. 6 and will culminate on Mardi Gras Day, which is Feb. 5. Just about everything you need to know about Mardi Gras, including tourist tips and hotel packages, can be found on Carnival historian Arthur Hardy’s Web site. We are not underwater anymore. We are open for business. We would love it if you came down and had the time of your life this Mardi Gras. You won’t regret it.

The Krewe of Proteus date should be 1882 and not 1992. Otherwise it wouldn’t be very old…
