There is a massive change underway in the mobile media market as it becomes unshackled from the operatorsâ€™ portals that have dominated it for a decade, all without having made any significant inroads into the content use of mobile users. The new capped data packages, fuelled by further competition, will see a total revamp of the mobile media market. I was one of the 200,000 readers. Loved the National, because it was a full newspaper about sports. Even today, the sports section of most papers is an afterthought, or stuffed with ads.

Excellent piece. I still have several copies of The National. The horse racing coverage was excellent, especially in an era when sports editors were (and still are) cutting back on racing coverage. But then again, I’m a racing writer myself.

Another wonderful story Bud! Thanks for bringing back those memories for those of us who remember The National. Glad you mentioned USA TODAY because I thought The National was the antithesis of the USA Today! In addition to the great writing, the graphics were terrificâ€”especially for the early 1990s. (The photography was top-notch too.) I was sad when The National failed, but sadder when I went to the news box and found a two-day old copy. Thank you, Bud, for writing this and Iâ€™m glad you found a home so that we can continue to enjoy your work!
