News flash: young people are obsessed with their appearance
by Ransom Riggs - February 20, 2007 - 9:00 AM

fat.gifWe’re not sure we needed the BBC news to tell us this, but according to a recent survey, kids today are hung up on their looks. They asked 25,000 women aged 17 to 34 how they felt about their bodies, and the results are a little shocking (even to we hardened cynics): 51 percent of female respondents said they would consider undergoing plastic surgery to change their appearance. The same number said they had skipped a meal to lose weight (which, since this forces your body into starvation-alert carbo-conservation mode, is actually counter-productive), and about 10% said they “hated” what they looked like.

That number rises significantly when the survey expands to include women over 40, 70% of whom said they had been on a “serious” diet within the past year. The average woman over 40, the survey revealed, would like to weigh less than she did at 20. In a chilling vision of things to come, experts are now warning that eating disorders can strike people of any age, not just the younger set.

  1. Does this comment make me look fat?

  2. If they did the same survey in Los Angeles the pie would look much different. My kids are 12 and 10, and they tell me, their school has kids who are Anorexic. Just the fact that they know what that is worries me.My M-I-L even told my 10 daughter after church on day that she is getting fat!I had to put up with my mom trying to keep me at an unrealistic weight and it is just wrong.I was VERY happy to see Beyonce on the COVER of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Even though the photos were taken when she had lost weight for Dreamgirls she still has more curves then any of the other girls on the INSIDE of the magazine.

  3. I’m not surprised. I see the trend in my two daughters, and they are only 8 and 9.

  4. If I wasn’t so frightened of surgery I might’ve been looking at a boob job and a nose job myself. Forget that I’ve ever ever had that kind of money to throw away in my life. But I can’t get all shocked when I know how they feel.
