In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past week, the late-night world is up in arms about NBC’s decision to reshuffle its late-night lineup — affecting Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, and Jimmy Fallon. People across the nation, and indeed the world, are joining Team Conan, Team Jimmy, or Team Jay (actually, mostly everyone is just joining Team Conan — does anyone really care about the other teams?). Lending his part to the cause, comic genius John Merriman has begun collecting impersonations of Jay Leno. I have selected some favorites here; check out Merriman’s site for a bunch more.
He’s got the full-on Mask face prosthesis.
Kimmel strapped on the fake chin as well, for his entire show last night. Where do they get these things?
From The Dana Carvey Show. Also includes impersonations of Quentin Tarantino, Anthony Hopkins, Rip Torn, Beau Bridges, Rich Little, and Richard Nixon. Check out a very young Steve Carell!
Congress and sex. Yep, sounds about right.
See also this clip from the other night, with some history and a brief Leno impersonation in the middle.
Check out Merriman’s Collected Leno Impressions for more, and post your own finds in the comments.
Arrggh! I can’t believe you left out Frank Caliendo! Out of ALL Leno impersonations, his is Dead ON. He even writes his own jokes to imitate ones that Jay Leno would tell in his monologue. Unless you’ve seen Frank do his thing don’t even bring anyone else to the table.

Fred Travalina [sp?] did a very good Leno impression. He even somewhat resembled a younger Leno. Sadly I think he died last year.

I believe Judd Apatow played Jay Leno in a skit on the Ben Stiller Show at the height of the first round of Late Shift wars.

Saturday Night LIve did some great ones with different people playing Jay like Kevin Nealon and Jeff Daniels. I love the one where Jay gets upset that Johnny has decided not to retire and Jay Shrunk in size and demanded that Johnny give back his cheap certificate that he had given Johnny Carson.
But there aren’t any clips of those great episodes practically anywhere. Nore any DVDs.
