Patrick Singleton of Bermuda has competed in 3 Olympics (and is currently on track to qualify for his fourth). He started in the Luge and has since changed to Skeleton. I guess the luge wasn’t crazy enough for him. He was featured in a Visa commerial and walked into the St. Lake Olympics with the Bermudian Flag and Bermuda shorts to match. That’s a warm weather winter olympian!

When I went to Jamaica a few years ago, I saw the Bobsled in the airport! They were selling shirts/asking for donations to send the team to Vancouver…guess we’ll find out if they made it or not…

While those of us here in the sunny, +10 degree Celsius, Metro Vancouver area are wondering exactly where we’re going to get snow (there’s grass right now on Cypress Mtn. where moguls should be!) and if Whistler’s going to have a bailiff’s notice plastered on it, it’s great to read these inspirational stories. While we’re fretting about how many decades it’s going to take to pay this endeavour off, we forget that there are people who have sacrificed much to compete at these games. Thank you, Mental Floss!

@kcz: 1) This article is actually about people from warm countries who compete in the Winter Olympics. Shaun White grew up in the good old US of A, which has plenty of mountains and cold weather.
2) Shaun White has ALWAYS been a snowboarder. From Shaunwhite.com: “At seven, Shaun entered his first amateur snowboard contest and won, earning him a wildcard entry into Nationals, where he placed just outside of the top 10.”

How is Shaun White not on this list? Wasn’t his sport skateboarding and then someone said he should translate that into snowboarding and he qualified in like a year…the guy has video games and stuff.
