Three Things I Didn’t Know About The Pomegranate
by Jason English - March 15, 2007 - 12:09 PM

pomegranate.jpgThe pomegranate is a hot fruit right now. Oprah has a Pomegranate Martini; Starbucks has Pomegranate Frappuccino. But I know very little about this trendy, antioxidant-rich treat.

• As Shirley Temple lovers might know, Pomegranate syrup was the original ingredient in grenadine.

• The term “hand grenade” comes from its resemblance to the pomegranate. In many languages, the words are exactly the same.

•Pomegranates are said to have 613 seeds, which is the number of mitzvot (commandments of the Torah). According to ReligionFacts.com, in the Jewish tradition, the fruit is a symbol of righteousness and often eaten on Rosh Hashanah.

  1. They now also have pomegranate tequila.
I can actually drink it without making “the face”. :-)

  2. AS FAR AS POMEGRANATE TEQUILLA, WELL, SOME THINGS JUST DON’T NEED FIXING…. I MEAN, JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN DOESN’T MEAN YOU SHOULD. YOU CAN PROBABLY MAKE MEATLOAF WITH DOG FOOD, BUT…. WELL YOU KNOW….

  3. Cool. I’m going to get me a pomegranate this weekend and count the seeds.

  4. That’s right: in Italian, pomegranate it’s “mela granata” and the hand grenade is “granata” as well.

  5. JOHN BROWN:

Would you mind terribly posting your comments in mixed case like all of the other posters do?

It would be ever so courteous of you if you did.

    Thanks.

  6. Another fun and informative fact abot pomegranate. The particular antioxidants have been shown to increase the skin’s ability to tolerate harmful UV rays by up to 25%, making topical suncreen more effective. Great news, because skin cancer and wrinkles are just yucky… and preventable.
