If you want to watch the best Olympics coverage, tune in to Canadian television. Oh, wait! I forgot. Only those of us lucky enough to live on the U.S. Northern Frontier get CBC or CTV on our cable systems!

Unfortunately American TV coverage of the Olympics is like a Lifetime Movie about sports without ever showing the sports. Instead, it’s all “Up Close and Personal” stories about the athletes and whatever personal hardships they’ve overcome. All with a non-stop narration by Bob Costas. Just show the dang ski-shooting!

It would make sense about “Colonel Hockey’s game” being shortened to hockey. What most commonly refer to as rugby is properly called rugby football, football played with the modified rules first used at Rugby School in Rugby, England (or so the legend goes).

Legend has it that the hockey puck was actually invented during a game when the referee got tired of the rubber ball bouncing all over the rink – he whipped out his knife and sliced two chunks off the sides to make them flat.

You certainly skated around (pun fully intended) the controversy around hockey’s origins gracefully! As many Canadians know, both Kingston, Ontario and Windsor, Nova Scotia claim to be the real birthplace of this great game. Sometimes the discussion makes Quebec’s sovereignty fights look like schoolyard squabbles!
