Comic artist Stephen Pfeil recently posted his interpretations of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as the master artists they were named for would have intended them to look.  On top of Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael, Pfeil also explored how more contemporary artists would have depicted the turtles, including Dali, Picsaso, Monet, and Pollock.

The pictures are fun, and it’s hard not to wonder what the Renaissance masters would have thought about the crime-fighting turtles named after them.

  1. It appears they lost their hosting, at least temporarily?

  2. I think Leonardo (the artist) would have thought his name a better fit for Donatello (the turtle), him being the technical one/inventor and all.

  3. @Bert: Leonardo leads. Donatello does machines.

  4. That’s a fact, jack.

Sorry, couldn’t resist. Like the artist, I always thought about TMNT when learning about the real artists. I pictured them as buddies eating pizza.

  5. Cool pictures!

Back in high school, I was competing in Academic League. One of the questions that was posted was to name 3 sculptors that made staues of David. We named Michaelangelo (of course), but were stumped on the other two. Our team captain said, “Give me the name of a ninja turtle!” – and I remembered that Donatello had also sculpted David as well. (We never got the third one – Bernini for those of you keeping score.)

  6. I’m so glad that you posted this!!! I love TMNT! I own ALL of the live action dvds, so that’s very cool.
    This was an interesting link

  7. The site was offline for a brief amount of time due to some hosting issues, but it’s been back up for some time now! Check it out at http://www.notreallybutseriously.com
