No discussion of this topic could be complete without the mention Iner Souster and his experimental instruments. Check 'em out.

Back in the early days of MIDI, there were all sorts of experiments with alternative controllers, the most famous of which was (probably) Tom Hanks' giant keyboard in "Big". There were air drums, which were sticks with inertial sensors built into them, a MIDI suit (similar to, but less sophisticated the one seen above) with sensors at all joints and extendors, and Gregory Hines' MIDI tap shoes in the film "Tap" with Sammy Davis, Jr.

My favorite, perhaps, was an entire percussion ensemble using discarded industrial products (No, not "Stomp", although they're really good) dating back to around 1978 or so - can't remember the name of the group but I sampled a lot of their sounds and used them in TV scores and commercials I was doing music for in the '80s.

We had a whole event in Science Olympiad back in high school where people made their own instruments. It was pretty neat.

Ha! I did that when I was little, banging on pots. Although it continued until I was about five. I used the lids as cymbals.
