One other item I can add. When driving on the side streets in Hana we saw a Peacock walking in someones front yard. I never expected to see a peacock outside of a zoo.

thanks for the recommendations, stew! i was staying down the road from hana hotel @ the little-too-communal-for-comfort joe's place. i headed uphill at 6:40, and they stopped serving dinner at 7, so i'll have to try again next time. but i did stock up at the hana ranch grocery, where the snow peas and walk-in beer cooler were tops! and yes, the general store at the base of the cove was indeed trippy; so much ephemera--i bought a satchel of whole mac. nuts that doubled as a handy rattle. tons of great lighters i wouldn't be able to bring on the plane. now when i have my own leer jet...

Have dinner at the Hana Hotel. It's expensive but worth it. Great real Hawaiian entertainment at the bar (not your silicone enhanced phony Hula). Probably the most delicious most authentic Hawaiian experience you will have... I have a friend who's aunt lives in Hana... been there twice for several days. Also stop in Hasagawas (sp?) (general store), it's kind of neat to see what they sell in the general store at the end of the earth...
