in duxbury ma, at the tree of knowledge corner there is a gravestone like marker stating

Tree of Knowledge
1774-1845
mail box on oak tree for post riders and stages between Plymouth and Boston

the tree is long gone, but supposedly there is a curse on the town, that if this spot isn't commemorated, the tree will have it's vengeance...

i have a picture of it on my flickr

The brave General Mercer died beneath a noble oak tree, on the march from the Battle of Trenton to the Battle of Princeton (January, 1777). Recently, this tree (the Mercer Oak) gave up, but a grafted shoot has been planted in the same spot. A noble tree, a good man, a crucial moment in history.

Wow, I really messed that one up!

Here in the boondocks of Indiana, we have what is known as the Shoe Tree. It is at an intersection and it has progressed to more than one tree. The idea is to find a pair of shoes and throw them on the tree. It is odd and looks rather spooky at night.

Our town is notable for The Tree That Owns Itself. Legend has it that the owner of the property that the original Tree grew on was so fond of it that he deeded five feet or so surrounding it each way to the Tree. The original Tree died, but one of its offspring still occupies the land. The street that the Tree grows beside is still cobblestone because the county is forbidden from hurting the Tree from road construction. The residents of the neighborhood don't seem to mind, since it keeps through traffic out of their quiet area.
