They’re identically beautiful, a perfect size six, and always getting into trouble! No, we’re not talking about the Jonas Brothers, we’re talking about Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield! Get into your Fiat Spider and take a trip back in time to the lively, sunny and often horrifying town of Sweet Valley, California! Terrific!
Take the Quiz: Sweet Valley High
Err.. Who are they?

Simon–Sweet Valley High was a series of completely inane books that you would have read obsessively as a kid if you were now, like me, a woman in her mid to late thirties. Looking back, I have come to the conclusion that these books were the source of a lot of self-esteem problems for me and my friends, not one of whom was a perfect size six (or a perfect anything else)!

Man…BSC and SVH..good times. If you guys could do a Boy Meets World quiz you’d hit the my childhood favorite things trifecta.

Thanks, Simon, for asking the question before I had to! I guess I am too old for these. I was a huge Hardy Boys fan (even though most girls my age were reading Nancy Drew).

I had to look it up. There were 152 books published between 1982 and 2002. I am just new getting used to the fact that ALL the books my kids read have not only sequels, but series!

I read as many of these books as I could when I was little. I read Babysitters Club (I was in some special BSC book club) and Boxcar Kids and Sweet Valley High… and these were all so incredibly unmemorable. I loved them with all my heart though. I only scored a 55% and I’m pretty sure I read all of the books mentioned. I couldn’t tell you a real plotline or characters anymore…

I read both sweet valley twins and babysitters club when I was young. Twins was the complete opposite of babysitters club.

I did read a few SVH and BSC books as a pre-teen but then I got hooked on Christopher Pike.
I know what Miss Cellania is talking about, ever since kindergarten my daughter has been into one series after another. (Junie B. Jones, Magic Tree House, American Girl, etc.) I try steer her towards the classics too sometimes so that she doesn’t get in a rut.

I am 37 and used to love that series! I remember that the books would come out once a month and I used to call the B. Dalton at the mall to see if the new book had come in.
I do agree with Wendy though…everyone HAD to have a boyfriend and they were all so perfect. The ones who weren’t “perfect” at the beginning of the book (wore glasses, were overweight, boyfriendless) were inevitably made “whole” by the end (contact, weight loss, boyfriend).
I read them until I was in high school and stopped until a college friend bought me one as a joke. It was set in college and Winston (the class clown) was in a girls’ dorm by mistake, Liz & Todd broke up because she wasn’t “ready” to do it, Enid was a snob, Liz gained weight (the horror!!) and at some point, Bruce & Lila eloped. Gah! I can’t believe I remember all of that! :)

I used to read this and watch the silly tv show. Kind of scary how we’ve gone from BSC and SVH to girls reading Gossip Girl now.

A US size 6 is a size 8 in New Zealand (and the UK), where I’m from – I know that now, but I didn’t back then, so even more potential for self-esteem issues for non-American readers! I still liked the books when I was a kid though, I must admit…
