The Late Movies

Call me weird, but I love a good slow motion video of an animal drinking. No, not booze — just good old-fashioned water. There’s something mesmerizing about watching this stuff. Check it out! (Note: most clips don’t have sound.)

Dog Drinking (Slow Motion)

Did you know that dogs’ tongues curl backwards when drinking? Check it out.

Cat Drinking (Slow Motion)

Surprise — cats do the same thing. How did I not know this?

Cat Drinking from Faucet (300fps Slow Motion)

Brief but interesting.

Hummingbird Drinking in Flight (600fps Slow Motion)

You can see its little tongue darting out between drinks, about halfway through the video.

Swan Drinking (and Eating) (Slow Motion)

Watch the swan’s neck undulate as it takes care of some underwater business.

Another Dog Drinking (400fps Slow Motion)

A very pretty scene!

Human (Winter Olympics, Slow Motion)

An Olympian caught drinking in slow motion.

What Did I Leave Out?

Post your favorite slo-mo (or heck, whatever you want) in the comments!

  1. Chris, you’d love this ad featuring 1000 fps shots of dogs anticipating and receiving treats.

  2. I remember from The Yearling (I think) that deer roll their tongues and drink through them like a straw. I was fascinated with that as a kid and would try it all the time (not very practical, really :) )
I’ve never seen footage of this…it might be cool.

  3. @Johnny Cat I loved that youtube clip of the dogs getting treats in slo mo!Thanks for sharing that!

  4. thanks for gods creation.

  5. Wow. Now I know that cats backwash a lot…I’m gonna keep a closer eye on my glass of water from now on.

  6. I thought it was interesting/neat that the cat seems to lap at the water 3 times before pausing to swallow…really cool videos…Thanks!

  7. What’s incredibly to me is how much they slowed down that hummingbird video. You can actually count the wing beats! That feeding was probably only a few seconds. Amazing.

  8. From the look of the area around my cat’s water bowl, you would assume she puts her face into her water and blows!

  9. Goats also make their mouths into a pseudo-straw for drinking. And it sounds hilarious while they’re drinking then.

  10. @Johnny Cat… great link! I wish my dog could do that. She’s great at catching her mini tennis ball, but if you throw a treat or any kind of food at her, she’ll let it hit her in the face. She’s such a strange dog.
