Where Knowledge Junkies Get Their Fix
Ransom Riggs
Modest Mouse’s fish tale fantasy
by Ransom Riggs - April 5, 2007 - 9:43 AM

It takes a lot to catch my jaded attention these days, especially in a music video. But Modest Mouse’s latest offering, a bizarre hybrid of The Old Man and the Sea and Terry Gilliam’s absurdist fever-dream Brazil, goes so spectacularly out on a limb that I had to share it. I asked with the video’s director, Matthew Cullen, whose twisted mind came up with the concept. “Isaac (the singer) wanted to do something on a fishing boat,” he said. “That was his only direction; we went from there.” Wow:

Also, I’d just like to point out a disturbing amputee fetish that seems to be becoming a trend:

  1. Awesome video! Thanks for turning me on to it! I loved the song but had no idea the video would be that amazing too.

  2. This might sound really dumb but that picture of Cherry (the girl with the gun for a leg) is inverted. In the movie, her right leg is the one that’s been cut off.
