I have a teacher who’s a former senior editor at Harper’s Magazine, and he told me that another editor invented the “flash mob” as an experiment in literary journalism a year or two ago. After coordinating dozens of events (by randomly emailing hundreds of people) it got out of his hands, and the mobs began coordinating themselves.
