After we posted a quiz on time zones last June, reader Adam Harris wrote in to ask if we could do something similar with area codes. Yes we can! Which city is covered (at least in part) by each area code?

  1. 10/12 pure guessing! Perhaps I should play the lottery today…

  2. Here’s a hint- Area Codes used to be based on population. Back in the day of the dial phone, populated cities received area code with numbers thaty required little dialing (New York City 212). Cities with little population had numbers that required (Alaska 907)

  3. 10/12 – it’s those darn new-fangled overlays in the major metro areas that got me. I did get all of the traditional ones.

  4. I wound up getting 11 out of 12, and I only for sure knew two of those. Is this some kind of social engineering experiment? If not, I’m a little creeped out.

  5. Technically, Dallas is 214. When we in the area went to 10-digit dialing, Dallas proper kept 214 and everyone outside of Dallas who had 214 became 972. There are some 972 Dallas numbers, but most are 214.

  6. This quiz seems a little ridiculous. Am I wrong? I mean, c’mon. Really?

  7. I took it on the chance that one of the 5 or 6 area codes I know would show up.

    They didnt… 4/12
