Your Favorite Grade School Computer Games

Every Friday, I post a series of unrelated questions meant to spark conversation in the comments. Answer one, answer all, respond to someone else’s reply, whatever you want. Very casual. On to this week’s topics of discussion…

1. I did not learn to type in our fifth-grade typing class. That skill wasn’t developed for another six or seven years. I did, however, learn to transport a family across the mid-19th century plains while minimizing the number of children lost to dysentery. We also played a lot of Zork.

Oregon Trail and Zork were my favorite computer class diversions. But when we got our first home computer (1989?), I played way too much Castle Adventure. (A quick survey of people on AIM this morning didn’t turn up any Castle fans. Anyone remember it?)

What were your favorite grade school computer games?

2. Occasionally a message slips past the spam filter. Like a note this morning from a plumbing company, threatening to withhold services. This might be the worst slogan in terrible slogan history:

“If we do business with you we won’t do business with your competitors. But if we do business with your competitors we won’t do business with you!”

I hate getting backed into a corner like that.

We’ve all gotten emails from Nigerian princes and Viagra dealers. But what’s the weirdest spam you’ve received?

3. A couple weeks ago, I asked you to go back in time and chat with your 15-year-old self. Today, pretend that a version of you from 2030 showed up and said he/she could answer one question. What would you ask? (No questions on gambling advice. Biff Tannen beat you to that one.)

4. I’ve been looking for an excuse to put together a quiz on Aaron Sorkin’s Sports Night, so we may run a week of 5pm Quizzes on TV shows canceled too early. Any particular shows you’d like to see covered?

Have a great weekend!

  1. 1. Oregon Trail and Number munchers! We would play number munchers as part of our “math” time but the only game I would ever do was the prime numbers… it was the only one I was good at!

    2. It’s not really weird, but I get a LOT of spam from a limosine company. And every time i mark it as spam it still ends up in my inbox.

    3. I would ask my 2030 self boring questions that everyone would probably ask: what’s my life like? and all that stuff. But I would probably ask if I have adhered to the goals I had for myself for parenting my children.

    4. Firefly, Arrested Development (which I’m sure many people will say those…) and Dead like me, a show on showtime that only lasted 2 years. GREAT show.

  2. On item #1: I do indeed remember Castle Adventure! I remember playing it on our home computer, probably also around 1989. I still prefer Zork, though, and what we played at school was Oregon Trail. Oh, and in eighth grade as part of our social studies class we got to play Sim City. Like, the original. In monochrome. On early Macs. It was GREAT.

  3. 1. I like Oregon Trail, but also played King’s Quest and way too much Bouncing Babies, a game in which you had to move a stretcher to safely ‘bounce’ babies from a burning building to an ambulance.

    2. Can’t think of any particularly weird spam–usually delete it too quickly!

    3. I don’t think I want too many details about my future, so I guess I would just ask “Has it all turned out ok?” Granted in 2030 I will only be 58, so I hope there will still be plenty of time to go!

    4. I am going to agree whole-heartedly with the other Kate–Firefly (just re-watched entire series on Netflix), Arrested Dev and Dead Like Me would all get top honors. I might throw in Veronica Mars, too, for fun.

  4. 1. There was a game we played in elementary school (1985 or thereabouts) on TRS-80 computers hooked up to TV sets… I can’t remember the name of the game, but there were these two creatures, and we had to figure out what type of creature it was based on their characteristics… Ring any bells anybody??

    2. I get spam from Weight Watchers and from hair restoration companies. I am bald but I am not fat.

    3. I’d ask my 2030 self if any of my children’s books ever hit it big, and if I ever made it out of the cubicle. (Maybe I wouldn’t want to know.)

    4. Perfect Strangers. Seven years just wasn’t enough.

  5. TELENGARD! I can’t tell you how many hours I spent crawling the dungeons of Telengard. Once, when my character died, I wept. I cried. My parents tried to console me but didn’t understand.

Plus, Telengard was written in BASIC. It was a great introduction to reading code.

  6. Think Quick! and Lemmings.

  7. I loved Treasure Mountain and Outnumbered! when I was at home. I never realized how educational they were until now… sneaky computer games! Oregon Trail of course was the best in school.

  8. 1. I’m guessing that Oregon Trail will be the runaway favorite on this one. It was the greatest game ever. Also, I loved Lemonade Stand.

    4. I’ll second (third?) Firefly for shows that were canceled to early. I made my husband watch the DVDs recently and when we got to the end he wanted to know why I didn’t have the second season. He was crushed when I told him there was no second season.

Also, I may be the only one who liked it, but I enjoyed Aaron Sorkin’s Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.

  9. (to Aaron) that sounds similar to a game my sister liked called “Zoobini’s”.

My favorite game was “Eagle Eye Mysteries”, I could play that game for hours!

  10. @ Peter: LOVED lemmings. I loved when they blew themselves up “Armageddon!”

The Incredible Machine was great too… and Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego? wow, I played a lot more gmaes than maybe I should have! They’re all educational though right? My parents refused to buy us a nintendo but I guess they didn’t have problems with the computer games at all!

  11. The original Civilization game. The graphics were just terrible and animation was basically nonexistant, but it was just an amazing game that stole hours and hours of my time.

Anyone know where to get a copy of the original Civilization? I’m sure it’s less memory than an mp3.

  12. Okay, so I’ve been desperately querying people my age to find anyone else who played this game in elementary school. You were a slave, and you had to use the Underground Railroad to escape to freedom (possibly Canada?). It was similar in style to Oregon Trail — which we also played, naturally — only you were given an arsenal containing pepper spray for some reason.

Help me, Flossers! Convince me I’m not utterly mad! Or tell me I’m making the whole experience up — really, I just crave resolution.

  13. 1- I was never big on comptuer games (I suppose I was too busy talking with strangers on ICQ), but I seem to remember playing…Ski Patrol? Some downhill skiing game where you had to avoid trees and Yeti. That was about it for my madd gaming skillz.

2- I received my first email from a Nigerian prince just two weeks ago! I felt like I was finally “in” with the popular kids.

3- I would ask my 2030 self where I’m living. At this point I can’t even imagine where I’ll be in five years, so it would be nice to know where I settled down (hopefully the answer is somewhere sunny).

4- I don’t thik I could top Aaron’s answer, so I’m not even going to try.

  14. 1. I loved playing The Oregon Trail and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? during G/T classes in elementary school. There was another game we played that I’ve been trying to figure out the name of. Maybe someone on here knows. You had two containers that you could fill with liquid and then pour into the other container or dump out. The point was to have a certain amount of liquid left–like you might get a 5 oz and 3 oz container and had to figure out how to get 4 oz of liquid. Anyone know what that is?

A little later, in middle school, I loved to play the You Don’t Know Jack games on my home computer.

    2. I hardly ever open spam. I’m a wedding and portrait photographer, and I advertise on Craigslist a little. One time I got a response to one of my ads that said something like, “I see you’re unemployed, so go check out my job-finding website.” How exactly does advertising on Craigslist mean I’m unemployed???

    3. I guess it depends on how you view time. Is it a straight line that can’t be changed no matter what you do? Or by changing certain things, would you alter the course of your future? If it’s a straight line, then your future self is what was always supposed to be your future, and you could ask all the questions you wanted and it wouldn’t change a thing–in which case, I’d probably ask questions about my family and friends, my job, and my general happiness. However, if you think that you could change the future by making different decisions, then I’d say don’t ask any questions at all. What if your future self tells you that you shouldn’t have taken that job or dated that guy, so you don’t, and that dramatically alters the path you were on and creates a new one where maybe you’re dead by 2030 or something. Lol.

    4. I have to agree with Dead Like Me. I love that show (except for the “movie” because that was just awful, aside from the fact that Henry Ian Cusick is in it).

Also, starting back up in June is Futurama, which would make another good choice.

  15. How about The Secret Island of Dr. Quandary?!?! I bought it from the book sale.

  16. 1. Oregon Trail, Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego, and Kings Quest IV were my favs.

    3. I would ask my future self how I made it to 2030.

    4. Pushing Daisies. I really want to know where Ned’s dad is and if he knew about his son.

  17. Odell Lake rocked my entire world!!!

“you hear a screech, what do you do…”

“OH NO!!!, you were eatin by an osprey”

at least thats how i remember it going now!

  18. My favorite childhood game was the Original Super Mario Brothers and PacMan, which my mother and I used to play at the laundromat when we were doing (what else?) the laundry.
No spam for me, I hardly ever get it.
In talking to myself in 2030 (I’ll be 44 then), I’d ask myself if I ever do become a biology professor, and if I decided to settle down and get married and have children or am I still living in an apartment with my cat? (Not that that’s necessarily a bad thing).
    Can’t think of any shows.

  19. 1. Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?
I played this game everyday and I also loved the TV show. I miss kids’ game shows.

  20. 1. Oregon Trail, of course. I’m sure we probably played others but that’s the only one I remember. My partner and I were doing so well one day that when our regular teacher returned to the computer lab, she told us we didn’t have to come back to class until we finished the game. We ended up missing about 20 minutes of class.

    2. I don’t know if I’ve ever gotten any really weird spam but I did once get one from someone using my brother’s (fairly uncommon) name.

    3. I’d want to know what to do to help my son succeed. I don’t mean asking what homework assignments he may have due or anything like that. I mean, what sort of guidance will he require that I can’t foresee now, what can I provide that I am not doing currently.

  21. 1. Maniac Mansion- I thought Syd was hot.

    2. King’s Quest- Took forever for the people to walk.

    3. Oregon Trail- Of course!

  22. I think I may be the only geek of my generation who’s never played Oregon Trail.

We had this one side-scrolling karate game that I can’t remember the name of. It was really, really challenging until I realized that there was a glitch where if I stopped at exactly the right place, I could kick the bad guys and they couldn’t kick me back. I remember a whole raft of text-based adventures (including the inappropriate-for-my-age Leather Goddesses of Phobos!). And I played the heck out of one of the early Ultimas (II maybe?).

As for TV shows, I’ll also toss in New Amsterdam. I understand why it was canceled, but it was too early. Oh, and Strange Luck. I loved that show.

  23. 1. Oregon Trail, Number Munchers, and Print Shop. I don’t think that was technically a game, but the banners and posters i made were awesome.

    2. The Young riders were cancelled way too early for me. Yes, the Pony Express was only around for a short time but I LOVED that show.

  24. 1. oregon trail
    3. i would ask my future self sports betting and financial questions

  25. 1. i too loved oregon trail and carmen san diego and i seem to remember some game where you built a city for bears? ring any bells?
    2. no weird spam here
    3. i’d ask if my son was potty trained yet
    4. my so-called life

  26. 1. Rainbow Lake
    2. Can’t say I have gotten bad emails, but I did get a call on my office phone one day asking me if I wanted to buy the local paper. When I told the guy he called me office not home he said well we have a corporate addition too.
3.Am I happy with the way my life is going?
    4.Raines with Jeff Goldblum

  27. 1. My last year of elementary (fifth grade), our school got its first computers: two Commodore PETs. One went in our classroom and one in the reading resource room. As a stopgap until they got a gifted program up and running the next year, I got to use the reading resource room’s PET a couple days a week. However, the only software they had for it was Oregon Trail. [And Oregon Trail on the PET didn't have the fancy graphics like you see above.] After a while, one runs out of ways to vary the gameplay.

When I went on to middle school, there was an actual computer lab with Apple II (and maybe IIe) computers and a variety of software.

    3. “What do I need to change?”

    4. I’d like to see a couple multi-show quizzes with a narrower focus, specifically limited to shows that didn’t make it to a full season (or maybe even to thirteen aired episodes). You probably couldn’t get a full quiz on “Woops!” or “The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer,” but put a bunch of them together and…

  28. I played this game (around 1998, I would say) that involved breaking into the school and disarming a bomb or something before midnight. And you could find clues and stuff around in different classrooms? Also, the theme song was strikingly similar to one of the original Nokia ring tone options.
I also enjoyed Cross-Country USA, which was a game in which you drove a semi across the country and had to budget your money for food, gas, hotel, etc. That was in 8th grade, or 2001-02.

    Also- Chip’s Challenge.

  29. 1. Oregon Trail, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, and the original King’s Quest. I couldn’t figure out King’s Quest for the life of me, went back to it about 15 years later, and finally finished the game.

    4. I’m totally on board with Sports Night, and since Arrested Development has already been covered, I’d go with Undeclared.

    Happy Friday!

  30. Does anyone remember LogoWriter? I referenced it in conversation a few days ago and got blank stares in return. Shocking, after the hours I spent telling that little turtle where do go, typing in long, complicated commands which, after an hour, yielded – maybe – a square. LogoWriter doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page!

  31. 1. I <3 Oregon Trail. Number Munchers, Kid Pix, and Mario Teaches Typing were also the shiz in my elementary school computer lab.

    3. Please tell me I moved out of my parents' house for good by my 25th birthday.

    4. Freaks and Geeks or Swingtown. Or both!

  32. 1. @Dan–YES Dr. Quandary!!!!! My absolute favorite!

    3. What is the most important thing I need to know?

  33. 1. I, of course, LOVED Oregon Trail. So many snake bites…
    2. Just the average spam involving erectile dysfunction drugs.
    3. I would ask if any further plans involved going back to 1955
    4. I LOVED Sports Night and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and swoon for Aaron Sorkin. I also loved Pushing Daisies and Arrested Development…and Firefly.

  34. Many of the games mentioned here already, but the ones I remember the most: Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? (with the atlas, and you’d have to type in random words to prove you had the book to get promotions), Number Munchers, and Oregon Trail. Dying by dysentary is still a joke among my friends, 20 years later.

We also had one that I don’t really remember too well where you were given a math problem, and then numbers were swimming in water like fish, and you had to cast your line and draw in the correct number.

  35. Man–I played the heck out of some Castle Adventure. I didn’t know that anyone else knew about it, so when I saw that on this page, I gasped so loudly that my sister in law asked me if I was okay! I loved that game so much!

  36. DINOPARK TYCOON. C’mon, who didn’t LOVE the heck out of that game?

And also the edition of Oregon Trail where you could write on the tombstones of the leaders when your whole party died. We had that one installed on the computers in middle school, but they had to take it off because everyone would kill all their classmates and write “nasty” things on the graves. We were just being witty!

  37. Awesome questions, once again!

    1. I got a Commodore 64 for Christmas when I was 8 or 9. My absolute favorite game was Cave of the Word Wizard – I was a spelling geek from birth! (Watch, I’ll spell a word wrong here now lol). My other favorite was Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy…but I’m fuzzy on whether I played that in elementary or middle school. =)

    2. A few years ago I started getting these weird spam emails that were kind of like bits of paragraphs pulled from other emails/websites — they were really long! I started arranging the sentences into poetry…oddly some of them were quite good and made sense!

    3. Wow…this one is tough. I think my question would have to be whether I am happy in 2030, and if that happiness has anything to do with what I’m doing right now. That might help me course-correct. =)

    Fabulous weekend to all!

  38. My favorite school computer game was Gizmos and Gadgets. Before each level, you would be given details of the various components needed to build different racing vehicles (cars, planes, blimps, etc). Then, you would have to go through different rooms, solving science puzzles to open locked doors, while trying to find the best components and build the fastest vehicle to beat your evil nemesis. They even gave you decals and paint jobs! All this recollection kinda makes me want to play it again haha

  39. 1. Oregon Trail, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? (that is where I learned what bat guano was), and the little LOGO turtle that could draw shapes.

    2. Can’t think of anything too out of the ordinary.

    3. Definitely what I wish I had done with my “youth” and what companies to invest in. Also, who would I wish I had spent more time with.

    4. Has anyone mentioned Freaks and Geeks? That show spawned so many stars. Also, Arrested Development and The Tick.

  40. Also, am I the only person in the world who has never played Oregon Trail? (Or does that just make me really old?)

  41. Um, personal computers hadn’t been invented yet when I was in grade school.

  42. I’d forgotten all about Oregon Trail! I loved that game but I could never keep the oxen alive, oh well. My favorite was Where in the World is Carmen San Diego. That game made me want to turn klepto in awesome red trench-coat. Carmen is my hero!

  43. 1. Carmen Sandiego, Fraction Munchers and Oregon Trail…except I always got cholera and died.

    2. I recall a message from a sender named “Driftwood P. Eyeballs” It cracked me up all day long.

    3. I think I’d just be relieved that there was a me from 2030!

    4. Greg the Bunny got cancelled way too soon! Scatchamagowza!

  44. I must be the old person on this site. The only video game I can recall from my childhood is pong. (Showed it once to my kid who still cannot believe anyone found fun in that game). Oh yes, there was Pac Man, Tetris and Centipede, too.

We played board games instead. My favorite was MahJong.. not actually a board game but a fun game nonetheless. This would not be the computer solitary version but the sit down at a table with 3 other folks and move tiles around version. It was similar to Rummy

Firefly, an unappreciated show that I discovered after it was already off the air. As I understand it, the program was shown out of order and they kept changing the time slots which helped to lead to its demise. I liked the movie, Serendipity, which they made to try and tie up the loose ends of the series,

  45. 1. Oregon Trail, Number Munchers and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego.

    4. I loved Sports Night. Also, Firefly, Freaks and Geeks, and Arrested Development.

  46. 1. In my 5th grade GATE class we played a game that was called (I think) Moon Myst. It was a murder mystery, but had NO graphics. You just typed directions for your character to follow (“Go to dining room” or “Open bathroom door”) and the program would give back results (“Dining room empty” or “Butler in bathroom. He screams and slaps you and runs away”) We played that game for HOURS. I remember it was like the old word processing screens – bright blue with white text. And Logo writer! What fun to make only right-angle turns and every once in a while a 45 degree turn! LOL.

    2. I only get the usual spam.

    3. What is the most important thing I must remember going forward?

    4. There are a LOT of great suggestions (especially Arrested Development, Freaks & Geeks, and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip) but I have to say I miss The West Wing. I think it had more time!

  47. #1 – Oregon Trail and Mario Teaches Typing

  48. @Kate- I remember LogoWriter. I don’t think I used much (if at all) but my parents were teachers and used it quite a bit. I’m shocked that even Wikipedia has never heard of it!

  49. #4 – Jack and Jill

  50. 3. What will I most regret?

  51. 1. Load Runner. I played this all the time on my PC.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lode_Runner

    2. I find it interesting the SPAM I supposedly send to myself.

  52. #1 – Scorched Earth. No questions. I played this for HOURS after school for a few years.

  53. 1. I loved Oregon Trail of course, my poor husband being Canadian never got to play and he says he feels left out. I liked where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego (wasn’t any good at the World version). Also Treasure Mountain, Mario Teaches Typing, Castle Adventure (I was so excited to see it on here, even though I totally sucked at it), I know we had some great DOS games growing up, I just don’t remember them all. One I remember had something to do with zoo animals and the alphabet.
    2. No real spam here either
    3. What to expect with the baby I am about to have and any other children we have in the future. Did I ever become an art history prof?
    4. I have to agree with the previous poster who said Futurama

  54. 1. I played Oregon Trail and loved it. The game I remember playing the most was Beyond Castle Wolfenstein. You had to infiltrate Hitler’s bunker and plant a bomb to blow him up. I did several times.

  55. They didn’t have computers when I was in grade school…
    or Junior High…
    or High School…

When I was in college one summer I stayed on campus doing odd jobs. One was programming a computer which I knew nothing about. I spent 3 weeks playing 3 dimensional tic tac toe, until my professor found out and suggested I find another job.

About 5 years ago I signed up for something and as soon as I hit the send button I knew I was in trouble. The next day I had about 400 pieces of spam in my office in-box. We’ve never been able to eliminate all of it and to this day I get about 20-25 a day. I just got one today from mathsirindia, “the place dedicated to mathematics – where LOGIC is worshipped and no place for MAGIC”.

I’d be glad that I was still alive in 2030. I’d probably ask about my son who is now 11.

    Northern Exposure.

  56. 1. So a few weeks ago I was talking with my mom and sister about a computer game I loved as a kid but couldn’t remember the name of, and it was Castle Adventure! You have no idea how exciting it was to find a post on it this morning on mental floss! I promptley emailed my sister, made our day. I also loved Where in the World is Carmen Sandeigo, Number munchers and Orgen trail. I also learned to read with Reader Rabbit.

  57. 1. Word Rescue! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Word_Rescue

  58. @Kate, yes I remember Logo. I was going to mention that on my list. I always used a black background and bright neon colors.

Other favorites include the obvious Oregon Trail, Carmen Sandiego, Number Munchers, and one I haven’t seen mentioned here: Gertrude’s Secrets (I did just have to look up the name based on the hazy memory of it).

I wouldn’t want to ask my future self anything. Knowing the future would be awful.

    Cancelled too early: PUSHING DAISIES.

  59. 1. Kate – Yes I remember Logo! We played that way too much in elementary school. I think I worked my way up to making some type of star. I was so proud!

    2. We have pretty tight Spam controls but lately a few that are written in some type of arabic language have slipped through. I am a little afraid of what those actually say or what the attachments are.

It does however put emails from The Big Ass Fan Company in my spam box and that is a real company who we buy things from. One of the greatest company names ever.

    3. I’ll be 54 in 2030. I’m just hoping the moisturizing paid off.

    4. I loved the show The Guardian.

  60. Wow, do I feel old. We didn’t have computers (I had a rich friend who had one in college).

BUT…did anyone else get to watch “Donald in MathMagic Land” in school? It was a Disney movie (natch) that we watched on a reel to reel and the highlight of my year. (because I’m math retarded and all of my math teachers hated me)

  61. 1) I remember playing Lemonade Stand when in school.

It’s still available online, in a variety of styles

  62. I have been trying to remember the name of this game forever now. It was on the Apple IIe, was similar to Centipede. The worm would fly back and forth on the screen above your city and you blasted it from a gun in the center, and at the start of each level it played a snippet of Axel F from Beverly Hills Cop.

  63. 1. SIM TOWER!

    3. Am I still at my current job? (Please say no, please say no!)

    4. More ‘Seinfeld’ quizzes please! Or how about one on ’24′ (since we’re on the last season now)

  64. 1. Number Munchers all the way! I played a lot of Carmen Sandiego, but that was at home :).
    2. I got one with a typo once and the subject line said, “Give your partner great organisms!”
    3. “What were you thinking?”
    4. Arrested Development!

  65. Want to play ZORK and a bunch of other Infocom games?

    Check this link:

    http://www.xs4all.nl/~pot/infocom/

(BTW… I used to love to play Zork in my dorm room on my Appe IIe, but eventually – either the E or I key (can’t recall which, as it’s about 20 yrs later) become nonworking…

  66. I do remember Castle Adventure, and I LOVED it. I also remember a slightly later computer game called, maybe, Castle Quest, that was similar in design. Also wonderful for my youth.

  67. 1. I remember a game where you were on a treasure hunt. You had a flashlight. You entered commands to proceed on your hunt. You met a troll after you crossed the river. Can’t remember the name of the game, though.
    2. I got a job offer for an assistant manager’s position that I had not applied for.
    3. Are you happy?
    4. “Dead Like Me”, “Dark Angel”,”Pushing Daisies”,”FireFly”, “John Doe”, “Profit”, “Tru Calling”, “Profit”, oh, and did I mention “Profit”?

  68. Oops, I mis-read question 3. I thought my future self was asking my current self questions. I guess I’d just ask “How’s life?” or maybe “What shouldn’t I do?”

  69. 1) I used to love Castle Adventure- i was never very good at it though
My favorite games were Oregon Trail and Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego!

    2) Nothing intresting latley- just the usual

    3) What career path will be the most fulfilling?

4)Saved by the Bell: the college years could be fun

  70. 1. I loved Oregon Trail and Number Munchers. At home, my family had a Family Feud game and a Mother Goose game that I couldn’t get enough of. All of the Mother Goose characters were scattered all over the place and you had to go around and put them back in their right nursey rhyme.

    2. I’ve been getting some spam about “Great Phone Offers” and I don’t even know what the heck I signed up for!

    3. I would ask if my kids are doing okay. I don’t have any (yet) so I would be getting two answers for the price of one question.

    4. I agree with the majority here on Firefly and I love Studio 60 which my fiance and I just finished watching again. And hopefully Better Off Ted hasn’t been cancelled but if it is, then that goes on my list too.

  71. Gorrilas on MS-DOS

  72. 1. In elementary school we had no computer games. Or computers. Or calculators. We did, however, have kits to build radios, or our own weather stations. And we would play “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea” and “Star Trek” on the playground. Those shows had computers, so we played vicariously through them.

    Ah, the 60′s!

  73. 1. Oregon Trail for sure! And O’Dell Lake (the one where you were a fish and had to decide to do when stuff would float your way). Andy of those MECC games were GREAT FUN! We always had a couple of hours a week in the library playing educational computer games.

    2. One of my email accounts somehow gets spam from Mitt Romney!

    3. I would ask if my family is happy.

    4. ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT !!!!

  74. 2. I get offers for power chairs and from AARP. I’m 18.

    4. Everyone probably mentioned this, but Arrested Development was amazing.

  75. 1. Number Munchers and Oregon Trail, also Treasure Math Storm
    2. I get a lot of spam but the memorable ones are always the one where they tell me that I won the lottery.
    3. Are you happy with your job and what is it?
    4. Firefly, Moonlight.

  76. I’m feeling a little deprived. We did not have computer class in elementary school (it wasn’t that long ago) and in igh school, there were no games on the computers, just plain old minesweeper…

  77. 4) Way back in 1992, Fox cancelled Woops! after airing 10 episodes. I’ve been heartbroken ever since. :(

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woops!

  78. Oregon Trail and the original Sid Meiers Pirates! I learned a lot about colonial shipping as a kid.

  79. Hello to my fellow old’sters

We played a lot of RISK when I was in High school. DND came along in ’76-’77. We played 8k-trek and Devils Dungeon on the IBM 1130 and, Space Invaders at the arcades. Anybody remember Scott Miller’s first ascii game on the PC? Kind of a Nethack thing. What about Commander Keen?

  80. oregon trail, number munchers, and odell lake.

  81. Doesn’t anyone remember DigDug? We used toplay that in Computer Science class in 1983 on the very first Apple computers.

I’d ask myself if my kids made it through college. i just want to make sure they are ok.

Don’t know about many series cancelled too soon but if they cancel Chuck after this season i might revolt aginst NBC

  82. 1. Definitely, DEFINITELY The Secret Island of Dr. Quandary. Man, every time I had a spare moment in computer class it was all about that game.

That, and Math Blasters. And Oregon Trail, of course. Stupid dysentery.

  83. We played a lot of Oregon Trail and all kinds of Carmen SanDiego games — Where in the World, Where in Time, Where in the USA. Actually, if you google “virtual apple” you can find a website with a playable console with many of these old games loaded. A couple of years ago, when the Floss ran a post about the Oregon Trail series, someone posted the link and I spent many afternoon Study Halls shooting Buffalo and carrying 150 pounds of food back to the wagon.

  84. 4. arrested development

  85. Up here in the great white north we didn’t have “Oregon Trail” but we did have “Cross Country Canada”. Also loved “Where in the World is Carmen San Diego” and “Logo” (the turtle-command game). Those where all on our elementary Apple’s.

At home we loved “Gorilla” (enter is a trajectory and acceleration and try to hit your opponent w/ an exploding banana) and “Nibbles”.

    Also, King’s Quest V.

  86. 4. the adventures of brisco county jr.

  87. I remember plenty of games from my childhood, and I still play some of them on an Apple emulator today.

The version of Oregon Trail that I’m used to was minimally graphic compared to the screencaps you always see today. I remember you shot deer as they ran across the screen, and you had to lead them just the right amount.

One that was frustrating for years was Mystery House. I was sitting in a night class playing it on an emulator on my laptop when I solved it in 2000. That was a culmination of 15 years for me and I wanted to jump up and shout, but I didn’t want to be noticed in class. I’m certain that my face went pale and I remember feeling cold once I realized that I was about to solve it.

My favorite action game was a platformer called Hard Hat Mack. You were a construction worker called Mack who had to complete several tasks whilst being foiled by the bad guys-Vandal and OSHA. I remember that it was possible to die by falling into a Porta-Potty.

I also remember a Scholastic educational series called Microzine that I liked quite a lot. It was consistently good, and the disks foiled my every junior hacker attempt to copy them. If I could get ahold of a few of those today, I’m sure I’d enjoy them again.

  88. The hours I spent playing oregon trail II and then the sims 1 and 2. xD

  89. 1. I LOVED Castle Adventure! I haven’t thought about that game in years! Of course, I also played Oregon Trail and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?

    2. I think I get pretty normal spam. I can’t remember the last time I even read spam, I just automatically delete everything that is from an address I don’t know.

    3. What should I avoid? (I feel this is open ended enough to include investments, people, natural distasters, etc)

    4. Freaks and Geeks and Dead Like Me.

  90. I would ask my 2030 self how badly George Lucas has screwed up the Star Wars universe (even more than he has already). By then the original trilogy will have been digitally re-edited to feature an entirely new cast, all in 3D, with an interactive element where you can pilot an X-Wing fighter and blow up the Death Star yourself, but not before evacuating all those aboard so as not to make Luke skywalker seem like a cold-blooded murderer. Or something.

  91. As everyone else did, I also loved Oregon Trail, and someone else mentioned Gizmos and Gadgets- another one I loved (throwing bananas at the monkeys!!!); however, my all time favorite was Logical Journey of the Zoombinis. That said, no one my age (I’m 21) seems to remember playing it, but how could you forget?! The tree stump saying “make me a pizza”? Being able to customize the little blue Zoombinis with different colored noses and hairstyles and shoes? For a project in my school we even had to make our own little blue guy…someone else remember this! And if you know where I can buy a version for Mac, I would be forever grateful :)

And naturally, Arrested Development is the best canceled show of all time ever. I want it to come back SO badly!

  92. I was in the 4th grade when the handheld electronic football games were all the craze. By the time I was in high school, we had Tandy TRS in the newfangled *computer lab.*

  93. No one has mentioned the game that I played non stop as a kid… it is called ROGUE. It was an old DOS based game, where you are going through 2 dimensional mazes and are attacked by letters (which stand for creatures, S for snake, H for hobgoblin, G for ghost), and you collect gold and potions, and travel level to level. Addictive, stupid, and really fun.

I would want to ask myself is there anything that I seriously regret, so that I can reconsider my actions when that time comes.

  94. #4: “Doctor, Doctor” “Better Off Ted” “The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.” “Wonderfalls” “Pushing Daisies” “Firefly” “”Q.E.D.” “Quark” “Legend” “When Things Were Rotten”
    “Salvage One”

  95. 4) I was geared up for ‘Earth 2′ when it came out (maybe in ’98). I thought it was an interesting sci-fi concept that never lasted

  96. 1) I’m having trouble choosing between Oregon Trail, The Secret Island of Doctor Quandary, and that dinosaur zoo game. I forget exactly what the third one was called.

    3) I would ask her who I can trust over the next couple of days and who has screwed me over.

    4) Pushing Daisies

  97. 1) Oregon Trail and Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?

    4) Firefly, Pushing Daisies, Joan of Arcadia, and Journeyman

  98. 1. Cross Country California and Cross Country USA – You had to drive a truck around the state or country to pick up different commodities and then deliver them to another area within a specific time limit.

  99. 1. “Glider” was on all the Macs in our school’s Mac lab, and after some typing lessons with Mavis, we’d all be flying paper airplanes around a house.

    2. I get a lot of Microsoft spam…. I’m an Apple repairman.

    3. I don’t think I’d want to know anything about myself.

    4. I ad to the list of people wanting Arrested Development.

  100. 1. Oregon Trail, Carmen SanDiego, Odell Woods, Odell Lake, Number Munchers…I loved them all! My dad was a principal, and during the summers he would bring home one of the school’s computers for us to play on. I got so good at Number Munchers, the kids must have thought I was a genius. I also got to really hone my buffalo-shooting skills on Oregon Trail.

    2. No spam for me.

    3. I’d ask them what the one thing they’d tell me would be. What’s the one thing that 52 year old Elly Vortex would tell me? I’d rather know that than, say, who won the World Series in 2011 (go Twins)

    4. I’m still upset about Firefly and My So-Called Life.

  101. 3. I would probably ask if I was happy with the way my life turned out.

    4. FIREFLY

  102. 1. There was a game on the computer at the Youth Center I went to called Capt. Keen. LOVED that game! I am too young to know the thrill of the Oregon Trail adventure, but it sounds like so much fun!

    2. I never open spam. If I don’t know the person, or didn’t subscribe to their site, (Strongbad voice): DELETED! I have gotten snail mail spam though. A couple of times, magazines have sent me a “Trial” issue to see if I’d like to subscribe. Those are promptly tossed!

    3. It would be so hard to ask my 2030 self ONE questions. I guess I would ask if I used the life lessons I learned while watched other people make mistakes and go through things to make my life better. Lesson like, live for me, not for anyone else on this earth, uphold my promises and commitments, be the friend wish I had, how to be a good supervisor, how to love my family and do right by them. Did the mistakes I watched other people make make a difference in how I lived my life.

    4. Golden Girls; Family Guy;

  103. 1.) I was addicted to Oregon Trail and Myst. I spent hours watching my dad play Myst and then when Riven came about, I beat it all by myself. I was so proud. Still am, as I have yet to meet anyone who has beaten the game prior to the age of 25.

2.) I get spam e-mails on my university’s listserv all the time, mostly from fellow students. The weirdest one was from one of my Poli Sci classes last semester that was asking people if they’d seen a car a kid had lost while he was drunk. It has a picture attached and everything. I don’t know if he ever found it.

3.) I’d just want to know I was doing something worthwhile with my life. I like surprises and asking questions would ruin the surprise.

4.) I think any Joss Whedon show deserves a good quiz… Firefly and Dollhouse were both cancelled in less than two seasons. Fool me once, Joss… Oh, and Arrested Development. Obviously.

  104. 1. Odell Down Under was a fav of mine! You were a fish and you had to eat things and get to a points level and then you became a better fish. Also, Dino Park Tycoon and Dr. Quandrary for SURE.

    4. SPORTS NIGHT I MISS IT!!!

  105. 1. Oregon Trail, of course. I have it on my iphone now and I still can’t survive to the end. I also remember a whole bunch of MECC games. They were for all subjects and I think it Number Munchers were there. I also remembered some typing game where you had to explore a house and type famous works of fiction. The geek in me loves typing games!

    4. Clone High. From the creators of ‘Scrubs’. So many guest voices and crazy stories!!

  106. CASTLE ADVENTURE! I remember that game! We had it on an OLD SCHOOL giant floppy disk! (Back when they were actually floppy…)

I also loved Chip’s Challenge, and the Windows 95 version of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade CD-ROM.

  107. 1. I, like everyone else, played ridiculous amounts of of Oregon Trail, but whenever we had computer “free time” in school Kid Pix was my game of choice.

    2. This isn’t necessarily spam because I signed up for it, but Variety.com sends me about 3 emails AN HOUR updating me on every little thing going on in the entertainment industry. They’re interesting, but sometimes slightly excessive.

    3. I don’t know what I would say… I don’t know if I would want to hear too much about my future life.

    4. The two shows I would like quizzes on weren’t necessarily canceled too early, but they’re definitely cult favorites. The first is the Wright/Pegg/Frost nerdy masterpiece that is Spaced. The second is Northern Exposure– it had a full six seasons, but I would still love a quiz about the people who called Cicely, Alaska home!

  108. Liz – I think the game you remember is “Midnight Rescue!”. It’s related to the game “Gizmos and Gadgets”, but Midnight Rescue! you travel around a school, trying to stop the bad guy from making the school disappear. To do this, you have to find clues in the school and stop the bad robots he has around the school by taking pictures of them. The soundtrack is, I believe, In The Hall of the Mountain King. Which I now have stuck in my head! I loved that game and used to play it all the time as a kid.

  109. 1. Dino Park Tycoon was the game of choice in our middle school computer lab.

  110. 1.) Bolo for macs was a sweet tank game to play with all of your friends instead of class work.
    2.).mail order russian brides
4.) Wanted it was on TNT and starred Gary Cole.

  111. 1. I liked The Logical Journey of the Zoombinis and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? We also played Amazon Trail (similar to Oregon Trail but you had to take pictures of the forest animals), but I don’t really remember it going anywhere.

    4. I would definitely say Clone High and Dead Like Me

  112. I can’t believe none of my fellow Canadians have mentioned Cross Country Canada. It was like the Oregon Trail (or Yukon Trail, again, where are my Canadians?), but you played a truck driver who had to drive goods around Canada. You could pick up hitchhikers, get in accidents if you didn’t sleep or eat right, and of course all of your goods could be stolen if you didn’t lock your truck!

The rest of the educational games tht I remember have been mentioned here, but it’s my civic duty to mention Cross Country Canada

  113. 1) Several good games – King’s Quest series, Police Quest series, Gabriel Knight, original Wolfenstein, Willy Beamish and Super Munchers. I would still enjoy playing all of them.

    2) Same spam all the time – work from home for 100K + a year or get your vicodin, valium, etc…

    4) I don’t know if this counts since it’s coming back, but Futurama is one of my favorites

  114. 1. Oregon Trail, Math Blasters, Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego, and Odell Lake. I remember one game in elementary school where you had a triangle like turtle and you put coordinates in and it did a geometric design, that was pretty neat too.

    3. What is one thing you would have me avoid doing?

    4. “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” was such a great show!! Others would be “Dead Like Me”, “Amsterdam”, and “The Coupling”.

  115. 1. Carmen Sandiego for LIFE.

    3. What’s the biggest mistake you made that I should avoid at all costs?

  116. 1. I remember Logo! I used to save my programs on our high tech cassette recorder before computers came with floppies. I never really liked Oregon Trail but remember Number Crunchers and some game with creepy clowns that was math or word related. I also remember playing the original Wolfenstein for hours on my Dad’s fancy 3 color display laptop.

  117. You aren’t crazy antoinette jeanine, I remember that game! But I don’t recall the name of it. Wasn’t it just text based?

A couple that I played were Lemonade Stand, and later Leisure Suit Larry. A friend somehow got a copy, and we’d play it when his parents weren’t home.

  118. We played the original Mario Bros. on Apple II. It was one screen, and you had to flip the enemies over after they came out of the pipes.

  119. I still play The Secret Island of Dr. Quandary!! Loved Oregon Trail, Number Munchers AND Word Munchers. Alsoooo all the Dr. Brain games. I am such a nerd.

  120. I can’t believe only one other person here played Telengard! I had it on cassette and managed to move it to floppy.

I still have it and use it.

  121. 1. Where in the world is Carmen Sandiago and Civilization @Nic I have every Civilzation to come out. I could probably post it somewhere. It might be tough to get it to run though, Old PC gmes like that are hard to get going on new machines.

    2. I got a spam that said someone has hired me to kill you, but since I don’t really want to kill you, you can pay me half of the contract and they won’t do it. Best spam ever I just about died laughing.

    3. I would ask my future self if I’m financially stable.

    4. Futurama quiz would be great specially with it starting again in June.

  122. I played alot of Civilization 2 and Age of Empires as a kid. That’s how I learned history.

  123. 1. Anyone remember Hugo’s House of Horrors? You move Hugo around with the arrow keys and type in commands to try and figure out how to rescue your girlfriend Penelope. It was sweet.

  124. 1. I realize that people already mentioned this, but I used to love – LOVE – the Logical Journey of the Zoombinis.
Wikipedia describes it better than I can: The Zoombinis “are peaceful and successful, living on a small island called Zoombini Isle. Their lives are interrupted by a race called the Bloats, who offer to expand trade routes and improve the Zoombinis’ quality of life; instead they take advantage of the situation and enslave the Zoombinis. The Zoombinis therefore decide to flee and search for a new home, and on their journey they encounter a variety of logic puzzles which the player must solve.” How cool is that?
Not only was it totally awesome, and you got to be all creative-like whilst making the Zoombinis, but it also built all (well, at least some of) the logic skills I use today. I blame it for making me obsessed with logic puzzle.
I still have the computer disc somewhere in my parents’ house. Unfortunately, I no longer own Windows ’95.

I believe it came in a pack with Where In the USA is Carmen San Diego, The Amazing Writing Machine, and this one game about interstellar space game shows. Man, they do not make them like they used to.

    2. During my first semester of my sophomore year at college I did a lengthy report on Anton Chekov. I’m not sure what I clicked on, but since then I’ve been getting hit on by fake Russian women. “I Want To Come To You From Russia” and “Find Dates With Beautiful Russian Women” and “Live Chat With Russian Women Online.” Some of the emails have strong mail order bride undertones.
It’s strange, because (as I’m a straight female social work student) I am probably in the “least likely to buy a mail order bride” demographic.

    3. Am I happy?
(Wow, that sounds much lamer outside of my head.)
Also, is it weird being in your 40s? And did I develop any allergies?

    4. I add myself to the list of people wishing for Pushing Daisies. Mostly because I only discovered it the month before it was cancelled.

  125. I remember playing Castle Adventure on my friend’s PC Jr. It really was a great game.

  126. ….forgot to include the link I found where you can download a copy of the game.

    http://www.classic-pc-games.com/pc/adventure/castle_adventure.html

  127. #1 – I played a lot of Sim Ant in school… I just remember always picking the Red Ant colony and trying to invade the house… And when I got a little older Civilizations.

Plus, has no one mentioned all the wonderful Oregon Trail extensions like Amazon Trail and, my favorite, Yukon Trail?

#4 I agree with many others, but someone else said the two I like… “Veronica Mars” and “Joan of Arcadia” ( I think I see a theme there…)

  128. This week’s #1 really shows my age. We did not use computers. I remember it being cool when they would set up CCTV once in a while. Holy smokes, folks, we had a b&w tv with no remote until I was out of high school!

So now I’m too depressed to answer the rest of the questions because I feel like all those years in school must have been wasted if I couldn’t even play Oregon Trail or Math Rabbit (my kids did play those, though, and I admit that I loved Oregon Trail).

  129. 1. I played a lot of Nintendo. Mid-80′s, the first gray box. Favorites from that platform were Super Mario, ExciteBike and Top Gun. For PC, we didn’t get one until later, but I did play some at a friend’s house. I remember Zork, King’s Quest and Leather Goddesses of Phobos (anyone remember that one).
    2. Don’t get too much spam, as I’ve tweaked my email to be difficult for the engines to auto generate.
    3. I think I would just ask myself if I have a family by then.
    4. For favorite shows, I loved Picket Fences. The first season came out on DVD a couple years ago, but more have never been released. One of my other favorites didn’t even last a full season. It was called The Wizard and starred David Rappaport. It was about a little person toy maker who solves mysteries. Anyone remember that?

  130. 4. Another vote for Dead Like Me. Also, PROFIT! Yes!! Such a great show! I would also like to have Nowhere Man back.

  131. 1. Like so many I enjoyed Oregon Trail, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, Kings Quest, Dr. Quandary and Number Munchers! My family was obsessed with Myst and we would turn off all the lights and huddle around the computer as my Mom navigated around. It was magical. It took us 5 years to beat Riven, by far one of the best games ever.

  132. I obviously didn’t read Question 4 correctly. I’d like to change my answer to Joan of Arcadia. I loved that show.

  133. 1. It was a little after grade school, but I loved to play Mastermind on my Timex Sinclair computer. Problem was that I couldn’t get the BASIC program to reload after I saved it on a cassette tape, so I had to recode the entire thing every time I wanted to play.
    2. My spam filters have gotten pretty good. I rarely get any.
    3. How many grandchildren did I end up with? (I have six + now)
    4. I agree with Joan of Arcadia. I’d also like to see Six Feet Under.

  134. I forgot to list American Gothic in my list of ‘gone too soon’ shows!

  135. 1) Oregon Trail! Also: Where in the World/USA is Carmen Sandiego? There was another one that was a mystery where you had to go in a bunch of different rooms (it looked a bit like the castle one, but it’s not) and look for evidence/clues (not Clue itself). I can’t remember the name of it, though.

    2) I don’t read my spam. I just delete it.

    3) Well, in 2030, I’d be nearing 50 (meep!). I’d just ask how things are going in the future.

    4) Two of my favourite “cancelled too soon” shows were both Canadian (‘This Is Wonderland’ and, more recently, ‘The Border’). On this side of the fence, I’d go with ‘Now and Again’, which I also miss something fierce.

  136. 1) Not a computer gamer then or now. (My younger brother was the gamer in the family) I used my family’s computer to write stories. The Oregon Trail game sounds pretty cool though.

    2) I NEVER get any cool spam! sobbb

    3) “Kids?”

    4) Remember WENN, Strange Luck, T:TSCC

  137. 1. I remember our class doing a presentation on the different parts of the Apple II in 3rd grade for our parents. I was the floppy disk. We demonstrated Lemonade Stand and Oregon Trail in all of their green and black glory.

    2. I delete spam, but I love Spam!

    3. In 2030, I will be the same age my mother is now. (OMG!) I would ask what my son is up to (he’s almost 3 now).

    4. My So-Called Life, for sure.

  138. Zak McKraken and the Alien Mindbenders!!!!! Also Maniac Mansion, and Oregon Trail, naturally.

  139. Shelly, I think you’re referring to the game what Dave aforementioned, Mystery House. It’s on the iphone and it’s public domain.

  140. The only ones I remember playing in school were Lemonade stand and Oregon Trail. Though we did learn to make a rocket fly in basic. (I should put that on my resume.)

    I ignore spam

    Dead like Me and Wonderfalls!

  141. 2) i get a lot of spam for Jewish products and blogs even though Im not Jewish. not that i have anything against them at all, im just not sure where i got on to so many Jewish mailing lists.
    3) i would ask my 2030 self if the Avengers movies all turned out okay. And whether the Arrested Development movie ever happened

  142. 1. Oregon Trail!
    3. “Do I have kids yet?”

  143. 1. Think Quick!, Maniac Mansion, Carmen San Diego, and the Super Solvers games.

  144. 1. Oregon Trail at school and at home (maybe a few years later) I loved to play Shuffle Board Cafe. I also liked Kid Pix so much, my parents got me a copy for my birthday one year.

    3. Do I ever use my Master’s Degree?

    4. Pushing Daisies, Samantha Who? and October Road.

  145. 1. I loved Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego, Legend of Zelda on NES, Oregon Trail, Paperboy, Friday the 13th on NES, and Super Mario Brothers
    2. I tend to get lots of stuff from people who claim they are disabled and need help, yet they read just like a scam email
    3. Am I married with children?
    4. MY SO-CALLED LIFE (I miss this show so much!), Wonderfalls, Twin Peaks, Carnivale

  146. I must be older than most of you because we didn’t have computer games when I was in grade school. I remember my dad buying some console that hooked up to the TV and just played Pong. You would have to place a plastic sheet over the TV to represent a soccer field, hockey rink, basketball court, etc. but it was all the same game. Very boring.

Odd spam would have to be the spam in a completely different language & type characters.

    Am I happy?

American Gothic, Now and Again, The Job and The Shield. (ended too soon)

  147. 1. Definitely played Oregon Trail, but when I was 8 or 9 I also played this strange game where you played a detective taking pics of robots in a school. I think it was called Mystery Midnight Madness or something like that. I also played a lot of Theme Hospital. On Playstation, I liked Discworld and Theme Park.

    3. Did I finally figure anything out?

    4. Unfortunately, I have terrible luck with tv shows. With a few exceptions, most of my favorite series get canned quickly. If I’m lucky, like with Dead Like Me, I get a couple of seasons. But other favorites got cancelled after only a few episodes. Firefly and Wonderfalls comes to mind. Now that I’ve started watching The Big Bang Theory I’m hoping desperately I don’t cause its premature doom.

  148. Oh, and Liz N, I played Amazon Trail as well. Awesome game.

I somehow forgot Joan of Arcadia. Yeah…I’m responsible for that cancellation too. ;)

  149. 1. Carmen Sandiego, and I remember the school had Apples at the time and there was some company that had all of these games. I think Dave mentioned it as Microzine. I’d love to find the games and an emulator for them now. I also loved the Epyx Barbie and Winter/Summer Games.

    2. Spam for my sister from Bloomingdales. I still don’t get why I was getting her spam. I think somewhere in their system of cardholders our names were mixed up as well as our information.

    4. Veronica Mars- Definitely cancelled before its time but probably could do with its own quiz.

Reunion- Fox show that was cancelled before the mystery could be solved. The creators posted what was going ot happen online to give viewers closure. No DVD or anything on this one yet.

  150. Moon Patrol. My Dad had to install it on our Apple IIe, I remember to access it you had to type something along the lines of C:\\moonpatrolk – for some reason Pops added the k. Hopping over craters in a 12 wheeled vehicle rocks

  151. 1) Power pete…I loved that game! couldn’t get enough…also, there was another one at school that was underwater and you had to look for object and solve things. It’s really hazy, so I can’t figure it out.

    2) because I’m an idiot I fell for one of those stupid offers of getting a free giftcard..I put in my email and now I’ve been getting sh*tloads of spam. if I could go back in time, I’d probably stop by that moment and stop myself from doing that.

    3) I would ask myslef to tell me everything from this moment to the moment I came here.

    4) Life (with Damian Lewis and Sarah Shahi), Firefly (I love Adam Baldwin), Samantha who? (this was just a fun show), Early Edition (knowing the future and saving lives, FTW), if they cancel Chuck I will die a little inside, there was also a show where they presented five stories and you had to guess if they were true or not…oh yeah!! Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction…it’s on syfy every once in a while. I like tv…oh and the 4400…I never knew how it ended.

  152. Oh my, yes, Number Munchers and Oregon Trail were my favorites :3 I guess Kate and I might be of the same vintage x3

  153. 1. Carmen Sandiego was my absolute favorite. And next was Jewel Thief, which was absolutely not educational at all. You just moved your little thief cursor around the screen avoiding the bad guys (who ranged from Arabian guards to bats to toy soldiers to camels) bouncing around the screen, and tried to collect the jewels.

  154. 1. DOESN’T ANYONE REMEMBER AGENT USA? THE GAME INVOLVED TAKING A TRAIN FROM US CITY TO US CITY IN ORDER TO DESTROY THE FUZZBOMB?

  155. I remember playing a game which involed a guy driving in a car that would crash if you didn’t turn at the right moment, and he would have to go to the house’s in the town he was in and answer questions. and get clues to a troll’s question in order for you to cross his bridge. Anyone know hat this game was called?

  156. Castle Adventure! Amazing! I’m pretty sure I played this on my parents’ first home computer. All we had was DOS and a file system called X-TREE (I think).

Thank you for the great memory! And thank you to Tim for the link!

  157. 1. Oregon Trail and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? But Oregon Trail was the better of the two…much better!

    2. DELETE!

    3. What’s the one thing I should never do?

    4. My So Called Life, oh the drama!

  158. 1.) Oregon Trail!!!! Carmen Sandiego!!! Amazon Trail—well, except it always froze in the middle of the game.

2.) I get a lot of spam that goes straight to File 13, so no clue. Still really don’t get the point of spam. I mean, come on, NO ONE really buys that stuff, do they?

    3.) I’d be 44, so maybe if I’m happy.

    4.) Buffy the Vampire Slayer!!!!!!!!
    Gilmore Girls!!!
    Roswel!!!

    3.)

  159. Kate and Shelly, in a row you mentioned my most missed shows gone too soon, “American Gothic” and “Now and Again.”

HATED that they never tied up the stories.

  160. from Ireland so don’t recognise any of the games above but used to love Granny’s Garden during computer class, anyone remember that? really don’t want to see chuck cancelled, just loving it

  161. Where is all the love for Amazon Trail? Of course we had Oregon Trail and all of that, but Amazon Trail was way more fun!!

  162. 1. Oregon Trail
    2. Did you ever get another job and move out of Mom and Dad’s house?

  163. 1. The Zoombinis Logical Journey…i still sometimes play it. anybody remember?

  164. 4. Danny Phantom. Yes, I know it’s a cartoon, but I liked it.

  165. 1. There was an awesome creative writing/typing program that our computer had in 1st grade (1987). I have no idea what the name of it was, just that I wrote a horribly dark story about robbers who killed some people. My teacher called my mom, and I grew up to became an English teacher :)

    2. I got a series of emails from some girl who was convinced she had met me at some conference. I emailed her back to inform her of her mistake, but she wasn’t convinced and kept emailing me.

    4. I love Sports Night! I re-watch the entire series at least once a year. Futurama is another (although, they are reviving it this summer).

  166. 1. Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Daughter #2 plays Oregon Trail at least once a week at school.

    2. No spam for me. I don’t touch the stuff.

    3. Am I still married to the best husband in the world, or did he come to his senses?

    4. A British television show from the 80′s, The Young Ones. I watched it religiously on MTV and now have it on DVD. Who’s with me?

  167. 1. I, too, loved Oregon Trail at school, but at home I played Risk, Brickles, Tetris, and (most importantly) DARK CASTLE! I haven’t seen anyone else mention it. It was really cheesy graphic and your arm would jerk into different positions so that you could throw rocks at bats and rats.

    4. I’ll add yet another vote for Firefly and second Dark Angel. I also think that Dollhouse is getting canceled too soon right now. Plus, even though it went 4 seasons, Angel got canceled before it had fully run its course.

  168. 1. I can’t remember which games I played in school when I was little, but I did play a few educational games such as jump start 1st grade, and this one cool one with a rabbit…
2.Most of my spam is in russian these days, so I don’t know if it’s weird or not.
    3. Am I happy?
    4. Arrested Development.

  169. @Lauren:
I actually played a lot of Zoombinis in the 5th grade, on those old multicolored Macs.

  170. 1. the games i played the most were oregon trail and dragon’s keep. but by far the best game was karitaka. it was the only game in the lab that used a joystick and everyone always fought over it.
    2. i get a lot of stuff from nigeria asking me about my skills as a doctor (i am not a doctor).
    3. am i still alone?
    4. firefly, dollhouse, terminator: the sarah connor chronicles, bakersfield p.d., twin peaks

  171. My favorite classroom diversion game was Scorch/Scorched Earth. At home it was Wolfenstein 3D.

  172. The greatest show cut off in its prime…Chris Elliott’s “Get a Life.”

  173. #3 I’ll be 56. Did I ever have kids? Or do I regret staying with my husband? Was my life worth all this crap?

    #4 JOURNEYMAN!!!

  174. I don’t remember the name of the game I used to love playing at school. It was one of those diamonds and rocks games, but instead of really having to worry about the dirt it was a case of hundreds of gems – but you could easily get caught in between rocks etc.

    Good times.

  175. Loved Carmen Sandiego, some game with dinosaur eggs I don’t really remember, Fool’s Errand – anyone remember that?, the Temple of Ra… We also had a copy of Leisure Suit Larry, ha ha! Don’t know where that came from, I think me & my brother & sister knew it was the sort of thing our parents wouldn’t approve of, but I don’t think I at least really knew what it was about (I was the youngest). It was just text-based from what I recall, or at least the commands were i.e. ‘run away from angry pimp’ teehee :)
Lots of these old games are (I think) legally available online if you google a bit, including an emulator of Civilisation I for whoever asked.

  176. My brother and I played Castle for hours as kids! 1989 seems like a reasonable estimate based on our recollections. My brother recently did a web search and found a web-based version. It brought back fond memories of fighting over computer time.

  177. 1. I am too old for computers in elementary school. My daughters played a lot of Carmen San Diego

    2. strangest spam… at work we keep getting letters from Russian girls wanting to be our friend. Creepy

    4. favorite show MAXIMUM BOB it ran 7 episodes in 1998. Beau Bridges was a judge known for giving the maximum sentence, hence Maximum Bob. His wife was an ex-mermaid out of the Weeki Wachee mermaid show. The Central Florida towns people are just as Bizarre. Think a My Name is Earl type town. It was hilarious!

  178. Very exciting to see Castle on here! My sister and I both had actually downloaded DOS emulators to play it back in December.

  179. The Secret Island of Dr. Quandary. It was a weird game, where you started out at a target shooting game at a carnival. When you win, you choose a doll, which is your character for the rest of the game. Then you were teleported to some mysterious island and had to collect different items – some of which you earned after solving puzzles. Once all collected, the items are placed into a large pot to boil. It was a lot of fun.

  180. 1. Snooper Troops- detective game. Story Machine. Face Maker. Type Attack. Math Maze.
    2. Not sure
    3. Hmmm…
    4. Wonderfalls!

  181. Donna- yes I did watch Donald in mathmagic land, but that was in the era of VHS. Love it. I’d always try to play pool like they show you with the triangles and stuff, and I’d still fail. But I felt smart trying to do it!

    1. Treasure math storm, number munchers, scoop Mahoney, Oregon trail, word munchers
    2. Ummmmm…all my spam comes addressed to jullianna. Not my name…

  182. 1. When I was in elementary school I played a space invaders type game that my father programmed for our TRS-80. Later my dad programmed a Pac-man game for the TRS-80. When I was in junior high I loved Castle Wolfenstein on our Zenith made PC clone. In high school my dad introduced me to Leisure Suit Larry (anyone remember that one from the 80′s?).

    2. My spam is just boring so I pay no attention to it.

    3. I would ask my future self what personal and professional blunders I could avoid. Do I continue my photography hobby?

  183. Oh, I forgot to add the link for the Castle Wolfenstein Wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_Wolfenstein

It was my favorite PC game when I was a kid.

  184. 4. I would also LOVE to see a Firefly quiz.

  185. Does anyone remember Sticky Bear? It was a series of games for the Commodore 64 that taught numbers and letters. I learned my ABCs with those games when I was three or four years old (about 1987).

  186. NUMBER MUNCHERS! YES! The first game I thought of when I saw this post. Well, that, and Turtle….

  187. I know I’m late to the party on this comment, but does anyone happen to remember a computer game wherein you had to build monsters using different body parts, in like a lab or something? It was in the late 80s.

  188. 1) I was in university when the first personal computers appeared. The 8k Commodore PET.

But we also had timesharing on mainframes located somewhere….

GAMES: PetTrek: Real time, with real continuous movement thanks to the PET’s real time clock. Always was a Trekkie.
    Author: James Butterfield. Google him!

Stock Market: For the PET, which I later ported to the Apple ][+. I also improved the game a lot. Ah, If only I knew a programmer who could help me IBM’ize my version!

We also had a Japanese game, which I remember little about.

Then there was Spacewar on the DEC 2020 and Advent, an early adventure game.

I own an old Win 3.1 version of Oregon Trail, (but have no computer to play it on) Also have DOS RISK, and Wolfenstein.
As well As Gazillionaire, and some kind of DOOM game.

I pity kids today, because their games do it all for them, and you need a phd just to run the Flight Simulator. I had an old one, and though the graphics were poor, it was fun. I always crashed on landing…

    2) SPAM: Get very little. Delete it all. Never read any. Don’t think I am missing much….. SPAM s/b illegal.

    3) I’m a stale 54… Doubt I will make it to 2030… So, no questions.

    4) How about Due South? Sue Thomas FBI? can;t trhink of any other oddball TV shows to quiz out.

  189. 1. I thoroughly enjoyed Oregon trail and Lemmings, and I think we had a Where’s Waldo game, but I could be imagining that.

    4. Arrested developement, Dead Like Me, and Carnivale. Carnivale only lasted 2 seasons, and the season 2 finale is single most frustrating episode of television I have ever seen.

  190. 1. I actually didn’t play Oregon Trail until v5 came out, or something like that. But I played all the King’s Quest games (and still do – fans of King’s Quest should check out the redone versions of 1-3 done by Anonymous Game Developers [1 and 2] and someone I can’t remember [3]), Crystal Caves, Bolo Ball, Jill of the Jungle, Math Rescue, Word Rescue, and my favorite, I kid you not…

“Invasion of the Mutant Space Bats of Doom!”

We called it simply “Bats.” It was basically a ripoff of “Galaga” but you were trying to protect the planet from mutant space bats of doom (naturally). I still have it, on my last computer to have a floppy drive, I happened to find the disk one day and got it off the floppy drive and onto a USB drive.

    3. I’d like to ask my older self (a) who do I marry (I darn well better be married!), and where the heck he’s at now. Because obviously, he hasn’t found me yet, and he’s a typical male who isn’t asking for directions.

  191. Choplifter on the Apple 2e

  192. Ahhh… Castle Adventure, KingsQuest 1, and SpaceQuest 1 were the first adventure games I ever laid my hands on at the age of 8 or 9… And I didn’t even know english at the time. Didn’t matter to me, though. However it did take me a year or 2 to actually complete the games, but by then I knew more english than my school could teach me for a few years :-)

  193. does anyone remember the game where you were at a carnival, then you played a game and then you picked your prize from a set of 3 dolls. then you became the doll you chose. it then throws you onto a deserted island….i really wanna play it but i can’t remember the name :(

  194. 1. I spotted someone mentioning a Commadore 64. I loved Caveman Olympics. But for school Where In The world is Carman San Diego took up my time. When I headed home I played the Where in Time version.

    2. I always get the erectial dysfunction spam.

    3. I would ask if future me could change anything to make things better, what would it be? It would be nice to know the potholes ahead.

4 My wife and I were actually taking about the show Dinosaurs last night. “Not da Mama”. Like many more before me, Firefly should have never ended. Also Andromeda, though it went for a while, my wife and I love doing a marathon of the series (that takes weeks to do).
