I wonder if Joss Whedon saw this painting at some point in his life and it subtly affected his whole “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” work. A strong, unusual woman leading a band of others against the products of a hellmouth?

In a high school play, Top Girls, my friend Beth played Dulle Griet. She delivered a truly stirring (albeit masculine) performance!

I actually wrote my college thesis about this painting, and it is in part meant to illustrate a snarky Dutch proverb from the period which states in essence that if women are given too much power they will become so emboldened that they will even rob the gates of hell.
