I remember John Kieran–even as a child I loved him. He (clearly) had a dry sense of humor. I seem to remember his being involved with science?? Is anybody out there older than I?

I am old enough to remember ‘duck cover’ – it gave me nightmres for years! Apparenty protection from nuclear blasts includes desks and turtle shells. Scary stuf!

I’m ordering Ken’s book now. I remember that talk, but can’t find an online reference to the de-Nazification stuff (though I do see a lot of references to John Kieran being a fairly famous sports commentator).

Isn’t there a story behind the films that Kieran narrates involving Americans finding a boatload of educational films in Germany during the de-Nazification process? (not just “Human Grace” but Hair Dress, etc.) And they wanted to use the visuals, but needed new audio, so Kiernan was brought in to do it on the fly. I’m sorry I’m so vague on the details — I saw someone give a talk about this years ago — I think it was Ken Smith plugging his book, “Mental Hygiene: Better Living Through Classroom Films 1945-1970.”
