Add cold water, make hot rice!
by Mangesh Hattikudur - May 8, 2007 - 7:15 AM

20070505p2a00m0na020000p_size6.jpgA Japanese consulting firm has just developed a genius product called “Hotto! Raisu” where you can make a bowl of hot, steaming rice simply by adding cold water to their clever packaging! An exothermic agent in the foodstuff essentially steams the contents when liquid is added; a trick that could be incredibly useful to help feed those in areas hit by natural disasters. Currently, the rice is packaged with pickled ume plums, but if the marketing takes off, the team plans on developing more items for the menu. Link via the ever-terrific Boingboing.

  1. For some reason, this reminds me of an elaborate MRE w/ the heating pad which is activated when cold water is added.

  2. This is sort of like the Wolfgang Puck coffee that heats itself in the cup when appropriately activated. We used it during Hurricane Wilma and it worked like a charm.

  3. Wow, Sharon, I had no idea that existed. That’s so cool. I’m in NYC, though, so I guess I should pray for another blackout for a chance to use the stuff.

  4. so, did they mention how it tastes?
