Guess the Belarusian Movie Posters
by Mangesh Hattikudur - May 9, 2007 - 7:43 AM

Oh, man! For some reason when the movies go to Minsk, the poster art gets lost in translation. The first one’s for Scooby Doo (Shaggy’s such a giveaway), but can you ID the others? While we have full faith in your powers of deduction, we’re posting the answers in the comments. Link via the always entertaining Presurfer.

  1. ANSWERS: 1) Scooby Doo, 2) Freak Friday (That’s Jamie Lee Curtis on the right), 3)Just Married (with Aston Kutcher on the left), 4) Bridget Jones’s Diary, 5) Shallow Hal, 6) 50 First Dates

  2. Why do they all kind of look like they could be posters for ‘Thelma and Louise’?

  3. ha! maybe only because it killed at the Belarus box office? I guess it’s a formula, but it works… posters in India don’t look too different. I remember seeing one for Anaconda, and wondering why someone had drawn such an ugly dog.

  4. My russian is terrible after years of non-use, but does the Shallow Hal poster say that love is evil?

  5. heh… no idea!

  6. I knew Ashton Kutcher was a girl!!! I just knew it.

  7. Thank gawd I’m not the only person who kept thinking “Thelma and Louise?”

  8. The one for “Freaky Friday” looks kind of like Jody Foster and Susan Sarandon; if the artist saw them both as being really ugly and kind of man-ish. And Drew Barrymore looks really terrified of Adam Sandler for some reason.

  9. Thats funny because Jody Foster was in the orginial Freaky Friday

  10. The Scooby Doo poster is phonetically something like Skubi Du. The Just Married poster translates to Young Wife — I had to look at the stars to figure that one out. Ditto Shallow Hal with Dzhek Blek. (The title is Lyubov Zla, which translates to something like Love Evil.)

  11. Why do the people in the Freaky Friday poster look like they are on some kind of mind-altering drugs?

  12. I am just tossing this out there I don’t really know…

All the posters are paintings, not actual photographs. They all sort-of resemble the actual characters, but aren’t wearing clothes that those characters wore (i don’t think). Maybe the Belorussian government has a law saying movie posters (or American movie posters) must be painted to reduce the effects of Americanization. The movies are the same obviously, but maybe they are just trying to prevent it in public ads because you are more people will see the ad than the movie.
If not that then my guess is still along the lines of changing the way the characters look.

It wouldn’t be that strange of a law. Canada has a law reducing the amount of American TV broadcasted over the air by any one Canadian station.

  13. The ‘50 First Dates’ poster is scary. Her eyes aren’t even on the same level!

They all look like variations on ‘Night of the Living Dead’

  14. These are actually pretty cool. Bizarre, but cool.

  15. No way- I kept thinking Thelma and Louise-I was trying to figure out which one it would actually be! The 50 Forst Dates was pretty obvious, but the rest- wow!

  16. Well, I’m glad someone else has attempted to transliterate these posters. I’m not fluent in Russian but can somewhat enunciate the Cyrillic characters.

I have worked with employees from Belaruss. It used to be called White Russia by Europeans.

knho (with “backwards “n”) means cinema as in movie.

Yes, the Thelma and Louise thing seems to permeate these posters. Is this in the eyes of the beholders … or the artists??!!

I’d like to see posters for Reservoir Dogs or Sin City or Secretary, something not so benign. Of course, maybe those never made it across the borders into Belaruss!
