Neatorama has a link to Kevin Kelly’s crazy piece on the various ways live chickens are carried to the market in different areas of the world. I’d heard there were several ways to skin a cat, but I had no idea there were so many ways to move a chicken. My favorite is the poultry backpack. I’ve posted a few here, but there are more at the site. Link via the always amusing Neatorama.

You titled this piece, “Chicken Transportation for the Seoul” and featured China, Vietnam, and other Asian countries. Korea, despite the title, was not one of them. Did I miss the part where Korea is involved or is it just when you’ve seen one Asian country, you’ve seen them all? I love this site and read it daily,so I feel obligated to point out that little oversight adds to the notion of racially “lumping” all Asian cultures into one, despite many glaring distinctions. That in turn leads to the further entrenchment of prejudice and ignorance toward a diverse group of people.

lovely point Diana… you know, I knew that Korea wasn’t represented, and wasn’t even trying to lump races together. (It’s only now that I noticed the ones I posted favored Asia). Really, I just wanted to make some Chicken Soup joke. And a poor one at that! I’ll tweak the title… thanks for the insightful note. /m

Lighten up a little Diana. We know not all Oriental cultures are the same. It was just a funny pun.

This post is supposed to be *funny*? It’s repulsive. Human cruelty knows no bounds.

I guess the heading’s supposed to be a little funny, but really the post wasn’t about humor. To me, it’s about how people in different nations tackle the same problem- getting chickens to market. To be quite honest, I’m a vegetarian, so I’m not promoting the treatment of said animals. But as an anthropology major, I’m definitely interested, and fascinated, by similarities in various cultures. That said, I think your opinion is completely valid, and you’re certainly entitled to it. But even if you find it repulsive, I’m sure seeing the visuals will bolster your argument in the future.
